Peacocks Fall to Bulldogs in Overtime Battle

Upper Iowa women's basketball found themselves in a dogfight with Truman State from the tip off until the final buzzer sounded. After regulation and an extra period, they came up just shy in a 97-90 decision. This result was an improvement from last year's contest when the Bulldogs defeated the Peacocks 77-51. After being dealt their first loss of the season, Upper Iowa falls to 4-1 on the year. The Bulldogs improve to a 2-2 mark.

The dynamic duo of Katie Tornstrom and Lydia Haack combined for a total of 58 points in tonight's matchup. Haack recorded 28 points going 12-17 (70.6%) from the floor. She also chipped in eight rebounds and eight assists. Tornstrom tallied a career high 26 points, going 5-11 behind the arc and 8-19 (42.1%) from field goal range.

Truman State grabbed an early 13-6 lead in the first quarter and remained in control on the scoreboard, but not too far outside of Upper Iowa's grasp. Tornstrom helped pace UIU in the first quarter with 10 points. The Peacocks fought back and stayed within a five-point margin for the remainder of the half, only trailing 36-34 going into the locker rooms at halftime.

The two teams traded leads throughout the second half. Upper Iowa went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter with contributions from Haack and Emma Anderson to trail 61-59 going into the fourth quarter. With four seconds left of regulation, UIU was down by one. After configuring an out of bounds play without the ability to execute, Haack took over and drove hard to the basket, converting a three point play after getting fouled on the made bucket.

With Upper Iowa up 81-7 with seconds to go, Truman State had one last possession. They advanced the ball up the sideline and converted on an out of bounds lob-play that sent them into overtime. The extra period consisted of the Bulldogs capitalizing on their offensive opportunities and the Peacocks struggling to get in a rhythm. Truman State converted in crucial moments, including shooting 9-10 from the charity stripe. Hanah Belanger, who led TSU with 36 points (5th in school history) converted all of their free throws in overtime.

Next week, Upper Iowa begins conference play as they head to Winona State on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
