The Upper Iowa women's basketball team was unable to complete a weekend sweep as they could not overcome an off night from the floor. The University of Mary benefited from a 50% (7-14) clip from behind the ark and a plus-seven total from the charity stripe to down UIU 73-60. The Peacocks fall to 5-15 (2-12 NSIC), while the Marauders improve to 11-13 (5-10 NSIC).
A pair of reserves provided a major boost for the Peacocks as
Katie Tornstrom and
Savannah Domeyer combined for 24 points. Tornstrom led UIU with 13 points in 17 minutes, shooting 5-10 (50%) from the floor and 2-3 (66.7%) from three. She also grabbed six rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, and had an assist. Domeyer added season-highs of 11 points and eight rebounds, including five offensive boards, in 18 minutes. The center shot 4-9 (44.4%) from the floor and 3-4 (75%) from the charity stripe while adding two blocks, a steal, and an assist.
Jessica Musgrave tallied 12 points on 4-12 (33.3%) shooting and 4-5 (80%) from the free throw line. She added five boards, two assists, one steal, and one block.
Lydia Haack scored seven second-half points to finish with eight on 2-14 (14.3%) from the floor and 4-5 (80%) from the stripe. The point guard also contributed four rebounds and three assists.Â
The Marauders had their own trifecta of double-digit scorers, two of which tallied 20-plus points. Megan Voit scored 22 on 7-11 (63.6%) overall and 5-8 (62.5%) from deep while grabbing six rebounds. Ryleigh Wacha set season-highs with 21 points and 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. The freshman shot 6-12 (50%) from the floor and 9-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line, adding two blocks, one steal, and one assist. Macy Williams finished with 15 points and a game-high six assists while also snagging four boards and one steal.
Both teams started slowly as UMary scored all six of the game's points through five and a half minutes. Musgrave broke the seal with an and-one layup to cut UIU's deficit to 6-3, but the Marauders responded to regain their early six-point advantage, 9-3. Domeyer came off the bench and scored six points, sparking a Peacock comeback that saw UIU double up on the visitors, 8-4, to end the quarter with a 13-11 deficit.Â
Tornstrom gave Upper Iowa its first lead after knocking down a triple for the first points of the second quarter, but the Peacocks were held to just 2-16 (12.5%) overall and 1-7 (14.3%) from three for the rest of the half. The Marauders finished the frame on an 18-8 run, benefiting from an 8-12 (66.7%) clip from the charity stripe to bring a 31-22 lead into the break. The Peacocks scored the first and last points of the third period, but
Callista Rochon-Baker's last-second three only served to balance the frame as each team scored 17 points.
UMary opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 55-39, with 7:29 to play. Upper Iowa clawed back to cut the deficit to nine on multiple occasions, but the visitors had answers each time to clinch the 73-60 win at the final horn.
UIU shot just 30.9% (21-68) from the floor, 20.8% (5-24) from deep, and 65% (13-20) from the line, while UMary shot 42.6% (23-54) overall, 50% (7-14)Â from three, and 69% (20-29) from the charity stripe. The shooting differentials gave the Marauders a 45-38 rebounding edge, including a 35-25 margin on the defensive glass.
Up next, the Peacocks take their penultimate road trip of the season as they get back to NSIC South Division matchups. UIU heads to Wayne, Neb. to take on Wayne State College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, before facing Augustana University (SD) in Sioux Falls, SD on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 3:30 p.m.
