Cougars Pull Away From Peacocks in Fourth Quarter

The Peacock women's basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season after dropping game one of their double-header against the University of Sioux Falls Cougars in Fayette, IA on Saturday night. UIU battled back from multiple early deficits and remained within seven points in the fourth at 60-53, but ultimately couldn’t overcome their shooting woes en route to an 86-66 defeat. The Cougars improved to 1-0 on the season (1-0 NSIC), while UIU dropped to 1-3 (0-1 NSIC).

UIU battled back from multiple early deficits and remained within seven points in the fourth at 60-53, but ultimately couldn't overcome their shooting woes en route to an 86-66 defeat. The Cougars improved to 1-0 on the season (1-0 NSIC), while UIU dropped to 1-3 (0-1 NSIC).
 

The Cougars got up early by starting out with a 10-0 scoring run, but the Peacocks were able to respond with a 7-0 run of their own to close the gap. After scoring only eight points in the first eleven minutes of action, UIU scored 20 points in the final nine minutes of the first half. Guard Lydia Haack provided the offense for the Peacocks by leading all players with 8 points in the second quarter. Upper Iowa held USF to only 30.0% (6-20) shooting from the floor while having their best quarter of shooting at 41.7% (7-17).
 

The Peacocks cut their 34-28 halftime deficit to a single point at 34-33 following a Katie Tornstrom layup and a three by Haack. The Cougars responded by knocking down shots en route to a 26-point quarter and their best-shooting quarter of the contest (9-16 FG, 4-7 3PT). Upper Iowa did well to cut a 14-point USF lead to only seven in a 3:00 minute span at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters, but Sioux Falls closed the game on a 26-13 run to secure the 86-66 victory.
 

Peacock Leaders…

  • Haack tallied 14 points while adding a team-high 5 assists and 2 steals.

  • Brooke Evenson led the Peacocks with 15 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 2-4 from behind the arc and 5-6 from the free throw line. 

  • Ally Fink provided some defense with a game-high 4 blocks to go with 5 defensive rebounds and 5 points.
     

Cougar Leaders…

  • Megan Fannin and Anna Brecht led the Cougars and tied each other for the game-high in scoring with 20 points apiece. 

  • Dallie Hoskinson tallied 8 points along with game-highs of 15 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Peacocks return to Dorman Memorial Gymnasium for the second game of their double-header against Sioux Falls at 2pm on Jan. 10.
