Scoreless Streak Hurts Peacocks in NSIC Loss to Wolves

The Upper Iowa women’s basketball team opened up the New Year in Aberdeen, S.D. with a Friday evening NSIC matchup against Northern State University. The two teams battled neck-and-neck through the first 25 minutes of the game before the Wolves pulled away with a 19-0 run spanning over six minutes to put the Peacocks in a hole they couldn’t crawl out of. With the final score set at 77-59, NSU defended its home court and improved to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while Upper Iowa dipped to 2-11 on the season and 1-6 in the league.

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team opened up the New Year in Aberdeen, S.D. with a Friday evening NSIC matchup against Northern State University. The two teams battled neck-and-neck through the first 25 minutes of the game before the Wolves pulled away with a 19-0 run spanning over six minutes to put the Peacocks in a hole they couldn't crawl out of. With the final score set at 77-59, NSU defended its home court and improved to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while Upper Iowa dipped to 2-11 on the season and 1-6 in the league.

Upper Iowa's offense shot 43.8 percent overall and 58.3 percent behind the arc in the first half, but struggled to get things going in the final two frames as the Peacocks were held to 23.3 and 17.6 percent shooting, respectively, for just 23 second half points. On the other end of the court, Northern State's shooting efficiency also dropped in the last 20 minutes, however 12-of-15 shooting at the foul line helped fuel the 38-point half. The Wolves also upped their rebounding efforts in the second half to increase their offensive opportunities.

TURNING POINT… After the two teams traded leads midway through the third quarter, Erica Armstrong took a pass underneath from Marina Peinado to put the score at 46-45 in NSU's favor with 4:44 to go in the quarter. The Wolves then managed to score 19 unanswered over the course of the next 6:07 of the game for a 20-point lead, 67-47, with just over seven minutes left in the contest. Upper Iowa outscored the home team 12-10 the rest of the way, but the scoreless drought served as the difference maker as the game ended with an 18-point advantage for the Wolves.
