Despite a strong third frame and career night from senior
Haley Martin, the Peacocks were defeated on their home court by Minnesota State University, Mankato 86-67 on Friday evening. The Mavericks improved to 13-12 (10-11 NSIC) with the win while UIU dropped to 3-26 (0-21 NSIC).
Haley Martin made one of her final games dressed in Peacock blue and white a memorable one. The senior led all Peacock scoring with a career-high 16 points, added 10 rebounds to record her third career double-double, and hauled in her 500
th career rebound during the match. Martin shot 87.5 percent at the charity stripe and made 50.0 percent of her baskets both inside the arc and from deep.
Juniors
Emma Gaber and
Natalie Dinius each made three trifectas during the game and finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Savannah Domeyer made 4-of-4 attempts at the charity stripe to go with six rebounds and four blocks.
Casey Miles dished out six assists and stole away two possessions.
UIU shot 40.0 percent overall, 32.0 percent from three-point range, and 79.2 percent at the line. MSU converted 45.5 percent of their shot attempts from the field but struggled behind the arc and at the stripe, making 25.0 percent of their shots from deep and only 42.3 percent of their free throws.
The first half was all Minnesota State as the Mavericks cruised into half with a 44-26 lead. Martin and Gaber teamed up to score 15 of Upper Iowa's 26 points in the first half. The duo combined to go 4-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe.
Upper Iowa came out of the break ready to put the first half of action in the rearview mirror. The Mavericks captured their largest lead of the night, 46-26, to start things off but the Peacocks battled all the way back to within two with a 26-8 run. UIU shot 66.7 percent from the field during the stretch that saw the Peacocks score as many points in eight minutes than the entire first half. Seven Peacocks contributed to the scoring led by Dinius with eight and Gaber with six. Minnesota State was held to 23.1 percent shooting and committed six turnovers in the span.
The Mavericks were able to push their lead back to double-digits with a 10-0 spurt and 8:28 left in the game. Upper Iowa then cut the deficit back to eight, 70-62, with a Dinius triple but Minnesota State pulled away with a 16-5 run in the final five minutes for the 19-point victory.
The Peacocks posted a 14-0 advantage in fast break points, but MSU finished the game with a 54-25 scoring advantage in the paint. The Mavericks also defeated the Peacocks on the glass with a 41-37 edge.
Kristi Fett tallied 20 points and six rebounds, both team-highs, to lead the Mavericks in the win. Brooke Tonsfeldt added 14 points and Ashley Reed had 12 points and five rebounds.
Upper Iowa welcomes Concordia University, St. Paul to town on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. The regular season finale will tip-off at 3:30 p.m. and the Peacocks' three seniors will be recognized in between the women's and men's games.
