LOOKING BACK... The Peacocks and Wolves met in Dorman Gym to open February. Upper Iowa put together 40 minutes of hard work and team basketball, but came up two points shy of a huge upset. The Wolves escaped Fayette with a 68-66 victory. The Peacocks trailed by nine, 56-47, early in the fourth quarter, but used a 9-0 run to take a slim lead, 57-56. The run was fueled by UIU's young guns;
Madison Smith and
Emma Gaber each hit three-pointers and
Savannah Domeyer added some big buckets inside. As the clock moved under three minutes to play, the home team found themselves behind by five, 64-59, but a jumper from
Bekka Pierson and another trifecta from Gaber pulled the Peacocks into a tie, 64-64, with 1:49 showing on the clock. After the Wolves got a pair of free throws, UIU's senior guard
Ashley Rosenstiel stepped to the line and drained a pair of pressure free throws to tie the score, 66-66, with 11 seconds to play. Jill Conrad made a move in the lane after a handoff and got a short jumper in the paint to fall with four seconds to play for the game winner as UIU's final attempt by Rosenstiel bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
GETTING INTO THE NUMBERS... In the previous meeting, Upper Iowa converted 6 three-pointers while holding their guests without a triple in 4 tries. Northern State made their hay in the paint with a 40-28 advantage in points in the lane. Miranda Ristau led the way for the Wolves with 24 points and 9 rebounds.
Angelica De Paulo scored a team-high 16 points, while
Bekka Pierson added 15 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. UIU's four freshmen that got on the floor combined for 29 points including 8 points from Gaber,
Natalie Dinius and Domeyer and 5 from Smith.
Ashley Rosenstiel added 6 points and both she and
Haley Martin reeled in 4 rebounds apiece.
