Upper Iowa women's basketball improves their overall record to 3-4 after topping the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 63-54 on Saturday afternoon in their final game of the Puerto Rico Clasicó. The victory marks UIU's third in the last four contests and surpasses the Peacock's 2017-18 win total.
Bekka Pierson's first career double-double and a big second half by Savannah Domeyer proved to be the driving force the Peacocks needed to secure their second straight win. Pierson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and went 7-for-11 from the field to tie her season-high 17 points while Domeyer tallied 13 of her 14 points in the second half alone and added 7 boards. Natalie Dinius (13) and Emma Gaber (11) also netted double-digit points and Haley Martin contributed nine rebounds.
Upper Iowa dominated the glass by nearly doubling the opponents' total (51-28) to claim a 23-rebound advantage. Fifty-one rebounds is the highest total posted by the Peacocks since pulling down 55 against University of Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 23, 2009.Â
Upper Iowa got out to an early 12-2 lead fueled by three opening trifectas from Dinius (1) and Gaber (2). The Gallitos doubled UIU's scoring to finish out the period but the Peacocks were able to hold on to a 16-10 lead.Â
UIU opened the second frame with a 5-0 run which gave the Peacocks their biggest lead of the night, 21-10, but UPR-Rio Piedras battled back effectively and tied the game at 29-all with 1:35 left in the half. Paola Maldonado converted a jumper with 33 seconds left to give the Gallitos a two-point lead going into the break.Â
A big defensive effort by the Peacocks held UPR-Rio Piedras to just eight points and 25% shooting from the field in the 3rd quarter while UIU's offense added 16 points to the board off 7-for-15 shooting. Upper Iowa maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest to come away with a 63-54 victory. The Gallitos attempted 13 three-pointers in the second half but were only able to convert one off the hands of Alicia Penzo.
Upper Iowa only committed seven fouls during the contest which prevented UPR-Rio Piedras from having the opportunity to score at the charity stripe. On the other end of the court, the Peacocks went 12-for-17 (70.6%) at the line.Â
Maldonado paced the Gallitos scoring attack with a game-high 18 points. Penzo added seven points and a team-high five rebounds.Â
The Peacocks return back to the states and will open up Northern Sun play against Winona State University on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
