The Upper Iowa women's basketball team (2-19, 0-15 NSIC) lost a Northern Sun Conference cross-division match up with the Marauders of the University of Mary (10-11, 6-9 NSIC) on Friday night. UMary put the clamps on the Peacock offense and held their guests to only one three-pointer, while forcing 22 turnovers to claim the 73-38 win in Bismarck, N.D. The win marked the Marauders fourth victory in the last five games.
The Peacocks scored the first four points of the game on back-to-back makes by Bekka Pierson and Angelica De Paulo, but the Marauders outscored UIU 29-6 over the next ten minutes as the huge run extended into the second quarter. The Peacocks cut the gap back to 32-17 with just under two minutes to play thanks to a three-pointer from De Paulo and a pair of layups from Pierson and Savannah Domeyer. UMary didn't let the momentum turn scoring the final four points of the half to take a 36-17 lead into the locker room. The Marauders opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and outscored the Peacocks 37-21 in the second half to cruise to their 73-38 victory.
Both teams struggled to hold onto the ball during the game. UIU registered 22 turnovers, but UMary gave it up 20 times themselves. The big difference came on the glass where the Marauders held a 47-20 advantage in rebounds including an 11-3 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Cassie Asvig led the Marauders with a double-double thanks to 22 points and 11 rebounds. Gabbie Bohl added 20 points and 7 rebounds.
Pierson paced the Peacocks in scoring with 12 points, while De Paulo chipped in 9. Domeyer scored 6 off the bench. Natalie Dinius was held scoreless, but grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds.
Upper Iowa will head to Minot State University for another cross-division game against the Beavers in Minot, N.D. at 4 p.m.
