Upper Iowa's women's basketball team played host to the Huskies of St. Cloud State University on Friday evening in Fayette. The Peacocks got behind early and couldn't find traction until midway through the second quarter. St. Cloud State used the early momentum to come away with a 69-47 win and improve to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC. The loss dropped UIU's record to 2-15 overall and 0-11 in the conference.
The Huskies dominated the first thirteen minutes of the game jumping out to a 32-9 lead. St. Cloud State converted six three-pointers in the opening quarter on the way to their big lead. During the final seven minutes of the opening half, the Peacocks regrouped and battled to cut the margin to 40-21 by halftime.
SCSU shot 51.6% (16-31) in the first half and nailed 8 of their 14 long-range attempts. The Peacocks committed 9 turnovers in the first half which led to a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers and an 11-3 advantage in fast break points.
An
Ashley Rosenstiel three-point play midway through the third quarter cut the gap to 46-29 and capped off a quick 5-0 run for UIU, but the Huskies had the final answer. SCSU used a 15-5 run to close out the third quarter and push their advantage to a high-mark of 31 points before settling for a 61-34 lead heading to the fourth.
The Peacocks outscored their guests 13-8 in the final frame to set the score at 69-47 as the final buzzer sounded.
A pair of freshman led the Peacocks in scoring;
Natalie Dinius and
Emma Gaber both netted 10 points in the game. Rosenstiel scored 7 and added 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Savannah Domeyer grabbed 9 rebounds to lead UIU's effort on the glass.
Husky guard Madelin Dammann led all scorers with 18 points.
SCSU took advantage of UIU's 19 turnovers to claim a 25-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Upper Iowa will host the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday evening at 4 p.m.
