Upper Iowa lost their final game of the 2017 in Crookston, Minn. on Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks dropped an 89-61 decision to the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston in the Northern Sun contest. UIU fell to 2-12 overall and 0-8 in the conference, while UMC improved to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, but the Peacocks got back into the game with a quick 6-0 run to get back within two points at the three minute mark in the opening frame. The home team returned the favor with a 6-0 run to close the first quarter.
Minnesota Crookston continued their run into the second quarter pushing their lead to nineteen, 34-15, after starting the second quarter on a 16-5 run. Upper Iowa shaved a few points off the margin as the second quarter continued thanks to the shooting of
Natalie Dinius. The freshman guard knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to spark the UIU offense. UMC had a 48-34 lead at the break.
The Peacocks were able to get within ten points, 54-44, midway through the third quarter, but a 12-5 run by the Golden Eagles reestablished their lead to seventeen, 66-49, with just over a minute to play in the quarter. A three-point play by
Haley Martin and a pair of free throws by
Ashley Rosenstiel at the end of the quarter cut the lead back to twelve, but Micaela Noga knocked down a three-pointer with three seconds to play getting the lead back to fifteen, 69-54.
The Golden Eagles dominated the fourth quarter to the tune of a 20-7 score to run away with the victory. UIU converted two field goals in the quarter and turned the ball over seven times.
Dinius led the Peacocks in scoring with 17 points fueled by 5 three-pointers, while
Bekka Pierson netted 13 points.
Blair Klostermann pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds and Martin added 7 boards. Rosenstiel scored 5 points, handed out 4 assists and registered 3 steals.
Upper Iowa will host the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Jan. 5 and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, Jan. 6.
