Warriors Use Big Third Quarter to Post Win over Peacocks

Winona State 65 - Upper Iowa 56. Upper Iowa and Winona State University opened the Northern Sun Conference slate with an afternoon matinee in Fayette. The Warriors earned a 65-56 victory over the Peacocks thanks to a big third quarter that saw the visitors push a six-point, halftime lead to an eighteen-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Warriors earned a 65-56 victory over the Peacocks thanks to a big third quarter that saw the visitors push a six-point, halftime lead to an eighteen-point advantage heading into the final quarter. UIU closed the gap with a strong fourth, but the hole was too deep to climb out of. With the win, Winona State remains undefeated at 5-0 (1-0 NSIC), while UIU falls to 2-4 overall (0-1 NSIC).
 
Both defenses controlled the tempo in the first quarter as each squad came away with 13 points at the horn. The Warriors knocked down three deep balls, while the Peacocks dropped a pair of bombs out of the right hands of Haley Martin and Emma Gaber. Savannah Domeyer also scored three in the opening frame with a layup and a free throw.
 
A three-pointer from Natalie Dinius and a layup by Domeyer early in the second quarter gave Upper Iowa a two-point edge, 18-16. The lead was the last of the game for UIU; Winona State rallied with an 11-0 run in just over two minutes to take a 27-18 lead. The Peacocks outscored their guests 12-9 over the final five minutes of the half to cut the gap to six, 36-30, at the break. Five different Peacocks scored over the final five minutes.
 
Winona State took charge in the third quarter pushing their lead at halftime into an eighteen-point cushion moving into the final quarter. The Warriors knocked down 10 of their 15 shots in the quarter including a pair of three-pointers to outscore their hosts 22-10 in the quarter and take a 58-40 lead into the fourth.
 
The Peacocks owned the fourth quarter and outscored the Warriors 16-7 over the final ten minutes, but WSU's lead was too much to overcome. Blair Klostermann and Domeyer led the Peacocks in the final quarter scoring 5 and 4 points, respectively.
 
Klostermann and Domeyer led the team in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Dinius joined the pair in double figure scoring with 10 points, while Bekka Pierson and Emma Gaber each netted 6 points. Martin pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds, while Dinius grabbed 6 boards. Ashley Ray handed out 4 assists in her time on the floor.
 
The Peacocks will take a long trip south for their final non-conference game of the season on Monday, Nov. 27. Upper Iowa will take the court against the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. at 5:30 p.m.
