Box Score Upper Iowa hosted Minnesota State University, Mankato on Senior Day in Fayette. Once the game ended, the Peacocks honored and recognized three seniors including manager Tatianna Grayer and players
Aleesha Cleaver and
Whitney Kieffer. The Peacocks fell behind during a cold-shooting second quarter and the gap was just too much to overcome despite an impressive comeback. In the end, UIU's record dropped to 5-21 overall and 4-16 in the Northern Sun.
Upper Iowa got a three-pointer from
Whitney Kieffer on their first possession of the game, but Minnesota State used a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 lead. The Peacocks rallied to cut the gap to two, 11-9, thanks to a lay in by
Aleesha Cleaver and a pair of inside shots from
Karlee Grabau. When the quarter ended, MSU was hanging on to a 16-12 lead after Cleaver scored the final three points of the period. Minnesota State dominated the scoreboard in the second quarter holding Upper Iowa without a point for the first five minutes. When Kieffer knocked down her second three-pointer, the Peacocks had fallen behind by ten points, 25-15. The run continued for the Mavericks as they outscored the Peacocks 17-6 in the quarter to claim a 33-18 lead at the break.
Four minutes into the third quarter, the Peacocks fell behind by 21 points, 43-22, but a 15-5 run over the final six minutes of the period cut the gap in half. Upper Iowa's comeback was sparked by twelve points from Cleaver and
Kari Fitzpatrick and capped off by a three pointer from
Madi Meier. The Peacock rally pulled the team within 11, 48-37, at the final quarter break. In the fourth, Upper Iowa's defense kept the pressure up and forced several turnovers on Minnesota State. The home team had one final push in them as they cut the gap to four points when Fitzpatrick laid the ball in with just over two minutes to play. After a pair of Maverick free throws,
Sam Ofstad converted a layup to return the gap to four, with less than a minute to go. Cleaver knocked in a three-pointer with 18 seconds on the clock to bring the home team within three points, but the bucket would be the final one of the game for UIU as the Peacocks fell 61-56.
Cleaver led the team with 19 points, while Kieffer added 13 and Fitzpatrick netted 9 points and
Karlee Grabau chipped in 6.
Carly Pagel led the team on the glass with 6 rebounds.
Upper Iowa will head to Augustana University and Wayne State College next weekend for the final two games of the regular season in Sioux Falls, S.D. and Wayne, Neb.
