WEEKLY NOTES

UPPER IOWA | CONCORDIA-ST PAUL | MINNESOTA STATE | NORTHERN SUN

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL...  Upper Iowa leaves Fayette for their final road trip of the regular season this weekend. The Peacocks will be taking the court on Friday in St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the Concordia University, St. Paul Golden Bears (14-10 overall, 10-8 NSIC) before heading to Mankato, Minnesota to take on the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks (16-7 overall, 13-5 NSIC). Minnesota State is currently receiving votes in the WBCA National Polls.

EARLIER THIS YEAR IN FAYETTE… The Peacocks opened up conference play in Dorman Gym against the Mavericks and Golden Bears on Dec. 12-13 in Fayette. Although UIU lost both games, the Peacocks played well against two of the NSIC South Division favorites. Upper Iowa took Minnesota State to overtime before falling by five points in the extra frame on Friday night. The Peacocks and the Golden Bears locked up in a tight first half, but Concordia used 60% shooting in the second half to pull away with a thirteen point win.

EARLIER THIS WEEK IN MANKATO…  On Tuesday, travel partners Concordia and Minnesota State met at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn., to wrap up the season series between the two squads. The Golden Bears came out on top 86-73 to win their third game in a row. They were led by Ameshia Kearney who had a career-high 27 points to help hand the Mavericks their first home loss of the season.

LAST WEEK FOR THE GOLDEN BEARS…  Before traveling to Minnesota State on Tuesday, the Golden Bears hosted the Beavers of Minot State and the Marauders from U-Mary. The Golden Bears shot over 53% versus Minot State to win convincingly, 80-45. On Saturday it was a much closer affair for Concordia, who escaped with the 78-74 win. The Golden Bears were able to turn seventeen U-Mary turnovers into nineteen points, while the Concordia bench outscored U-Mary's, 28-4.

LAST WEEK FOR THE MAVERICKS… Prior to suffering their first home loss on Tuesday, the Mavericks won a pair of home games against U-Mary and Minot State. Aubrey Davis averaged 12 points, six assists, and 4.5 rebounds in the weekend series against U-Mary and Minot State. She led the Mavericks with 17 points in their 85-64 win against the Marauders, before being held to seven points in the 75-61 win over the Minot State Beavers.

REBOUND RECORD… Senior forward Lauren Buck is chasing UIU history as she approaches the all-time single season rebounding record at Upper Iowa. The Anamosa, Iowa native averages 11.4 rebounds/game and has 251 rebounds this year putting her one behind UIU Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick's record of 252 in a season (1996-97). Buck leads the Northern Sun and is 10th in the nation with 14 double-doubles this season. She also leads the Peacocks in scoring with 15.8 points/game.

THEN THERE WERE TWO...  The Peacocks only have two home games left on their regular season schedule.  Make plans to be in Fayette on Feb. 20 and 21 as UIU hosts Augustana and Wayne State.  Upper Iowa will celebrate Play4Kay Night on Friday and then honor their senior class following the game on Saturday.  As always, if you can't make it to Fayette, the home games will be live on KCRG 9.2 and 9.3 with Zach Carlyle on the call.
