Box ScoreThe Peacock women's basketball team visited with an old acquaintance in Dorman Gym on Monday night. Upper Iowa played host to the Knights of Wartburg College; the teams played each other twice a year in the Iowa Intercollegiate Conference prior to UIU's move up to NCAA Division II prior to the 2007-08 season. Wartburg won the rematch 69-66 after outscoring their hosts by six in the final quarter and erasing a three-point deficit heading into the fourth.
After a first half that saw the Knights take a 31-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime, the Peacocks found their stride in the third quarter scoring 24 points while holding their guests to 16. The eight-point margin gave the home team a three-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The big run in the third quarter came after Wartburg had opened up their lead to eight, 39-31, just three minutes into the period. Upper Iowa went on a 17-3 run over the next four minutes fueled by six points from sophomore
Ashley Rosenstiel and five points from freshman
Karlee Grabau. UIU's defense put the clamps on the Knights forcing three turnovers including two
Brooklyn Schamens steals during the run. Over the final two minutes of the quarter, Wartburg cut into the lead pulling within three, 50-47, entering the final frame.
The teams were tied three times in the fourth quarter with the final even mark coming with 2:48 to play as the teams were locked at 62-62. Miranda Murphy gave the Knights a two-point lead with a second chance lay-in, and after a few empty trips for both teams, Kailey Kladivo hit a jumper to put the visitors ahead by four, 66-62, with 35 seconds to play. Schamens stepped to the free throw line and cut the gap in half, but Kristie Sommer reestablished the four-point lead with two at the charity stripe. Schamens scored on a layup again and the Peacocks immediately fouled to put the Knights at the line with 3 seconds to play. Bobbie Burrows converted a free throw to push the lead to three, 69-66, and UIU's
Aleesha Cleaver came up short on her desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Turnovers plagued Upper Iowa on the night as the home team registered 19 giveaways, while only earning 10 assists on their 23 field goals. Each team made 23 shots including 5 triples, but Wartburg took advantage of 11 more free throw attempts to put three more through the net.
Carly Pagel, who is returning from a redshirt season due to an injury, led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Rosenstiel scored 12 and grabbed 4 rebounds, while Grabau and Schamens each netted 11 points. UIU won the battle on the glass 40-32 led by Pagel and
Sarah Benson's 8, as well as six for Grabau and Schamens.
The Peacocks will close out their preseason schedule with an exhibition game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against the #23 Iowa University Hawkeyes on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.?
