#10 Tigers Control Final Five Minutes to Steal Upset Bid from Peacocks

#10 Fort Hays State 74 - Upper Iowa 62. The Peacocks held a one-point lead with eight minutes to play, but a scoring drought over the final five minutes gave Fort Hays State the chance to steal the win from Upper Iowa.

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team tipped off their 2015-16 season with a non-conference matchup against the #10 Tigers of Fort Hays State University at the Applebee Classic hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn.  The Peacocks shot very well in the game, but turnovers and a five-minute scoring drought to end the game denied UIU's upset bid.  The nationally-ranked Tigers outscored Upper Iowa 22-9 in the final quarter of action to post the 74-62 win.

The Peacocks shot the ball well, but only attempted 48 shots hitting half of them.  On the other hand, the Tigers attempted 22 more field goals at a much lower percentage.  Turnovers limited Upper Iowa's offense on the night as the squad gave the ball away 30 times.  Peacock fans found out that turnovers are all not the same tonight as 19 of UIU's gifts to their opponent were steals by the Tigers, which frequently turned into transition fast breaks for Fort Hays State.  The Tigers held a 37-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

Despite their ball handling woes, UIU took a 34-30 lead into the lockerroom for halftime after converting 11 of their 24 shots from the field and 9 of 10 at the charity stripe.  Upper Iowa's biggest lead of 8 points came midway through the second quarter when Pagel converted a layup. In the second half, UIU's shooting stayed hot, but FHSU kept their hands off the Peacocks and did not allow Upper Iowa even one free throw attempt in the second half.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Upper Iowa still held a one-point lead, 53-52, but the Tigers used the first five minutes of the final quarter to build a 63-59 lead.  Karlee Grabau nailed a three-pointer with 4:53 showing on the clock to pull UIU within one, 63-62, but it would be the last time that the Peacocks scored on the.day. In their final 8 possessions, the Pecocks turned it over 4 times and missed their final four shots.

Carly Pagel and Brooklyn Schamens both scored 12 points, while Whitney Kieffer added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Pagel converted all six of her field goals to reach her dozen points.

Kieffer's 10 points drop the magic number on her taking over the career lead in points at Upper Iowa.  For her career, Kieffer has scored 1,418 points. She is now just 13 points shy of the all-time leader in points, Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringeberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431, and 6 points behind second place, Hall of Famer Walida (Hawkins) Hewitt (1993-97) with 1,424.

The team will be back on the floor at the Applebee Classic in Marshall, Minn. tomorrow to take on the Griffons of Missouri Western State University at 3 p.m.
