THIS WEEKEND IN UIU BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa kicks off a four-game homestand this Friday and Saturday with a pair of Northern Sun Conference South Division games. The Peacocks will welcome the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday night and the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday evening. UIU's last win came in Marshall, Minn. over the Mustangs a night after the Cougars controlled the match up in Sioux Falls.
EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST THE MUSTANGS AND COUGARS... The Peacocks dropped an 86-56 decision at Sioux Falls on the first Friday in December, but bounced back with an 82-75 win over the Mustangs on Saturday. Lauren Buck averaged 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in UIU's split on the road recording a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds at SMSU. Olivia Winkler led the team in scoring with 17 points a game over the weekend adding 4 boards. Lindsay Carroll averaged 14.5 points , 5 rebounds and 3 assists knocking down five three-pointers.
LAST WEEK FOR THE MUSTANGS... Southwest Minnesota State posted their first win of the season, 77-71, at home against the Augustana College Vikings last Saturday. The win came a day after the team dropped a 75-61 decision to the Wayne State Wildcats. Annessa Rosch scored a career-high 23 points in the first win of the season for SMSU cashing in on 8 of 16 three-pointers. She tallied 40 points and four steals in the weekend games and is the team leader in scoring at 12.6 points per game.
LAST WEEK FOR THE COUGARS... Sioux Falls split a pair of home games this past weekend, moving to10-2 overall on the season with a 6-2 record in NSIC competition. The Cougars won their second straight over cross-town rival Augustana on Friday night, 77-72. USF was led by Jaicee Ulmer off the bench who scored a team-high 18 points. Alison Klostergaard was key in the victory with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The following night, a first half offensive lull plagued the Sioux Falls against Wayne State and the Cougars dropped a 72-51 decision on Saturday. Taylor Varsho scored a team-high 15 points and freshman Paige Mriden connected on four of her five three-point attempts to finish with 12 points. The Cougars travel to Winona State and Upper Iowa this weekend, looking to stay at the top of the NSIC South Division standings.
LEADING THE PEACOCKS... With seven double-doubles (18th NCAA/2nd NSIC), Lauren Buck is leading the Peacocks this season with 15.1 points 8th NSIC) and 10.5 rebounds (35th NCAA/1st NSIC) per game. Four Peacocks are scoring in double figures. In addition to Buck, Lindsay Carroll (12.4), Olivia Winkler (11.9) and Aleesha Cleaver (10.1) are all helping to balance UIU's scoring. Winkler is converting 61.6% (8th NCAA/1st NSIC) of her shots, while Buck and Carroll have shot the ball well from deep connecting at 40% or better; Buck's 43.6% is 5th in the conference, while Carroll's 40% is 10th-best. Carroll is also adding the 4th highest assists in the NSIC with 3.8 per game.
SECOND HOME - KCRG 9.2/9.3... The Peacocks will be at home for six more games after tomorrow including next weekend for a pair of NSIC games against Minot State University and the University of Mary. All home games are broadcast live on KCRG 9.2 and KCRG 9.3 and live options are also always available online.
