THIS WEEKEND IN UIU BASKETBALL... The Peacocks return from the holiday break with a pair of Northern Sun Conference contests on the road this Friday and Saturday. Upper Iowa will take on the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Friday night at 6 p.m. and then move southwest to Northern State University to battle the #7 Wolves on Saturday at 5 p.m. Live stats and live video are available for the games this weekend and links can be found on UpperIowaAthletics.com/Coverage.aspx.
LAST SEASON VERSUS THE DRAGONS AND WOLVES... Upper Iowa traveled to Moorhead, Minn. and Aberdeen, S.D. last season as well but struggled on offense scoring an average of 54.5 points per game. Both Alex Nemzek Hall and Wachs Arena proved to be difficult settings for the UIU shooters. MSU Moorhead won 71-55, while Northern state earned an 80-54 victory.
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS... MSU Moorhead will enter the weekend with a 4-6 mark overall and a 3-3 record in NSIC action. The Dragons have lost two of their last three including the 2014 finale at Northern State in which the Wolves earned the 60-39 win. Meghan Roehrich leads the offense with 16.1 points per game, while Heather Strese adds 9.8. On the boards, Strese is pulling down 6.6 per contest including 2.5 on the offensive end. Natalie VanWyhe is dishing out 2.6 assists per game, while Morgan Banasik and VanWyhe provide the defense with 1.2 steals per game.
SCOUTING THE #7 WOLVES... Northern State has opened the season very well with 11 wins in their 12 games claiming the seventh spot in the latest WBCA Top 25 Poll. The lone loss came in Northern Sun competition at St. Cloud State after the Wolves opened the season with a 10-0 record. NSU defeated MSU Moorhead by twenty-one points in their last game before the break. Rachel Krogman paces the attack with 14.3 points per game, while two others join her in double figures scoring in the form of Megan Mutchler (11.3) and Sadie Stotesberry (10.9). Krogman is averaging a double-double thanks to her 10.8 rebounds which include 3.3 on the offensive glass. Four Wolves average more than a pair of assists per game, while Mutchler and Kara Hofschild are picking up at least one steal per game.
LEADING THE PEACOCKS... With five double-doubles in her last seven games, Lauren Buck is leading the Peacocks this season with 13.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Four Peacocks are scoring in double figures. In addition to Buck, Lindsay Carroll (12.9), Olivia Winkler (11.9) and Aleesha Cleaver (11.2)
are all putting in 11 points or more per contest. Winkler is enjoying her finest season converting 61.9% of her shots, while Carroll is knocking down her three-pointers at a 42.4% clip. Carroll is also adding 3.6 assists from her point guard position.
HOME COOKING... The Peacocks will return home next weekend for a pair of NSIC games against Southwest Minnesota State University and the University of Sioux Falls on Jan. 9 and 10 in Fayette. Live options online are available for all home games and are broadcast live on KCRG 9.2 and KCRG 9.3.
