Cold Shooting Plagues Peacocks in NSIC Showdown

Minot State 74 - Upper Iowa 61. Lauren Buck posted her tenth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds despite struggling from the field. Olivia Meier netted 15 points and grabbed 3 steals, while Lindsay Carroll chipped in 14 points and 4 assists. Aleesha Cleaver handed out 5 assists.

The Peacock women's basketball team forced their guests into 20 turnovers on the night, but Minot State was able to overcome the giveaways by shooting very well from the field.  The Beavers were dominant in the early going building a quick lead and holding off the Peacocks as they made runs to get back in the game.  After the loss, UIU saw their record fall to 4-11 and 2-9 in the NSIC, while MiSU improved to 8-9 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

The Beavers jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead and then expanded their lead to 32-16 with just under six minutes to play in the first half.  Upper Iowa found their stride after the final media timeout and went on an 11-0 run over the final five minutes.  The big run by the Peacocks pulled the margin to just five points at the break, 32-27.  Freshman Ashley Rosenstiel fueled the run with a layup and three-pointer thanks to assists by Lindsay Carroll and Aleesha Cleaver

The second half began much like the first with Minot State going on an 11-2 run over the first three and a half minutes to build their lead back to fourteen, 43-29.  Upper Iowa didn't wait as long to retaliate this time though; the Peacocks went on a 7-0 run thanks to five quick points from Carroll including a long ball from behind the arc.  By the midway point of the half, a pair of Cleaver free throws pulled the margin to six, 49-43, but the Peacocks would get no closer.  Christina Boag and Sarah Lester put the visitors on their backs and combined to produce an 8-0 run that pushed the lead from six to fourteen, 57-43, with over six minutes to play.  The Beavers maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game claiming the 74-61 decision.

Upper Iowa struggled from the field converting only 34.4% (21-61) from the field.  The Peacocks struggled on the glass too pulling down just 26 rebounds on the night.  Minot State shot 57% (31-54) from the field including 67% shooting in the second half.  The Beavers brought in 39 rebounds to win the battle on the glass.  Twenty Beaver turnovers kept Upper Iowa in the game, but in the end MiSU's shooting was too much to overcome.

Boag led the Beavers with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Morgan Klose put in 20 points and Sarah Lester dropped in 18 points.  Minot State enjoyed a 38-20 advantage in points in the paint.

Lauren Buck posted her tenth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds despite struggling from the field.  Olivia Meier netted 15 points and grabbed 3 steals, while Carroll chipped in 14 points and 4 assists.  Cleaver handed out 5 assists.

Upper Iowa will return to Dorman Gymnasium tomorrow, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. against the Marauders of the University of Mary for the fourth and final game of their current homestand.
