Head West Young Women; Peacocks to Face #8 Wildcats and Vikings

Upper Iowa will face a pair of NSIC South Division foes this weekend on the road at Wayne State and Augustana.

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... The Peacocks will look to snap a four-game skid against two NSIC south division foes on the road. Upper Iowa will challenge the #8 Wildcats of Wayne State College on Friday night in Wayne, Neb. before heading north on I-29 to Sioux Falls, S.D. for Saturday's match up with the Vikings of Augustana College. The Wildcats have won five straight games and are at the top of the South Division with a 14-2 NSIC mark and a 21-2 overall record. The Vikings were swept in a pair of road games and have lost five of their last six to fall back to 8-8 in the conference and 11-9 in all contests. As a team, Upper Iowa is 24th in the nation and 5th in the NSIC in free throw percentage (76.0%) and is 3rd in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (29.1%).

LAST WEEK FOR THE #8 WILDCATS... Ashton Yossi, a 5-8 junior guard from Dallas Center, Iowa, led Wayne State in scoring in a pair of NSIC road wins over the weekend averaging 16.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Yossi poured in a game-high 21 points Friday in a 75-67 win at St. Cloud State, going 5 for 13 from 3-point range, and also had four steals. Saturday, she netted 11 points going 3 for 4 from downtown to help the Wildcats win 81-69 at Minnesota Duluth. For the weekend, Yossi was 10 of 25 from the field and 8 for 17 (.471) and was 4 of 5 at the foul line. Junior forward Jordan Spencer had a consistent weekend scoring and shooting for the Wildcats, averaging 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two road wins.

LAST WEEK FOR THE VIKINGS... Emily Schulte displayed her scoring ability for the Vikings this past weekend. The senior netted 14 points on Friday in an 84-70 loss to Minnesota Duluth. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also had three rebounds and three assists in the game. Schulte put in a career-high 27 points on Saturday in a 74-73 loss to St. Cloud State. Schulte got her 27 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting (69.2 percent) including going 4 of 5 from the 3-point line. She also notched five steals in the contest, all in the first half. The senior was also a perfect 5 of 5 from the foul line in the game.

CONFIDENCE IS "KIEFFER" SUCCESS... Junior Whitney Kieffer is averaging 15.5 points (14th NSIC) per game and is now shooting 42.4% (17th NSIC) from the floor and 88.8% (21st NCAA/4th NSIC) from the free throw line. Kieffer also adds 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals (10th NSIC) and 1.8 assists per game for the Peacocks. The 5'9" guard has scored 1,280 points (76 games - 16.8 ppg). Kieffer is now just 151 points shy of the all-time leader in points, Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringeberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431. In second place is Hall of Famer Walida (Hawkins) Hewitt (1993-97) with 1,424.

GOOD "SAM"-ARITAN... Senior Sam Thrapp is leading the Peacock offense with 4.4 assists per game (6th NSIC). The Davenport, Iowa product is adding 9.6 points per game while shooting 38.0% (27-71) from behind the three-point line.

TUNING IN TO i-"CARLY"... Sophomore Carly Pagel returned to double-figures in her season scoring average with 10.0 points a game after racking up 28 points in two losses a weekend ago. In her last five games, the Sumner, Iowa product has netted 73 points for an average of 14.6 points per game. Pagel has pulled in 5.2 rebounds per game for the season.
