TODAY IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... The Peacocks are home for their final weekend of the regular season. Upper Iowa will host the Vikings of Augustana College on Friday and the #11 Wildcats of Wayne State College on Saturday. The three NSIC South Division foes will vie for seeding in the upcoming NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament, which opens with first round games to be played on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Wayne State (23-3, 7-3 NSIC) is ranked 11th in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll and is at the top of the NSIC South standings, while Augustana is in fourth place (14-10, 10-10 NSIC). Upper Iowa is in seventh place just one game behind Winona State University.
LAST WEEK FOR THE VIKINGS... Shaunteva Ashley continued her solid all-around play this past weekend guiding the Vikings to a split with a win over #17 Northern State. On Friday, Ashley had a game-high 23 points in a loss to MSU Moorhead. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also had six rebounds and five assists in the loss. Ashley had 19 points and six assists in the 79-62 victory over the Wolves. It was the junior's 12th-straight game with at least 16 points. Ashley's weekend averages were 21 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists.
LAST WEEK FOR THE #11 WILDCATS... Millie Niggeling averaged a team-high 16.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game as the Wildcats split NSIC home games over the weekend against #17 Northern State and MSU Moorhead. Niggeling had 13 points off the bench in Friday's 67-63 win over the #17 Wolves and had a team-high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting in a 61-50 setback to the Dragons. For the weekend, Niggeling shot 52 percent from the field (13-25) and was 3 for 3 at the foul line. Niggeling has scored double figures in 18 of 27 games this season, all off the bench, for the Wildcats and ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game.
"WHIT"-TY COMEBACK... Junior Whitney Kieffer pushed her season scoring average back over 16 (16.1) following a 33 point effort versus St. Cloud State. The 30+ game was her second this season; she netted 35 against Sioux Falls on Dec. 14. Kieffer also adds 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals (10th NSIC) and 1.8 assists per game for the Peacocks. The 5'9" guard has scored 1,358 points (80 games - 16.97 ppg). Kieffer is now just 73 points shy of the all-time leader in points, Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringeberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431. In second place is Hall of Famer Walida (Hawkins) Hewitt (1993-97) with 1,424.
SAM'S CLUB... Senior Sam Thrapp is leading the Peacock offense with 4.4 assists per game (5th NSIC). The Davenport, Iowa product is adding 9.5 points per game while shooting 36.1% (30-83) from behind the three-point line. On Saturday, the Peacocks will recognize Thrapp as the lone senior. In two years, she has played in 54 games making 46 starts. She has scored 429 points in those contests while recording 219 assists and106 rebounds.
