THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa enters the weekend against familiar foes. The Peacocks went 3-1 in their two weekend matchups with the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. UIU swept SMSU and split with USF in 2013-14; the two wins over the Mustangs pushed the Peacocks' win streak over Southwest Minnesota State to five straight dating back to a 63-62 win in Fayette on Jan. 27, 2012. NSIC OPENERS... Upper Iowa dropped their NSIC opener at Winona State University last Saturday, while Sioux Falls dominated their contest with the Mustangs in Marshall a week and a half ago, 91-50.
LAST WEEK FOR THE COUGARS... Taylor Varsho, a transfer from Colorado State University, recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds in the team's win over Southwest Minnesota State. She finished the game shooting 9-for-13 from the field, including 6-of-9 on three-point field goals. Varsho had her double-double in place by halftime with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The six made three-point field goals were a new career high.
LAST WEEK FOR THE MUSTANGS... Lauren Hedlund totaled 24 points in a pair of games last week to lead the Mustangs. She amassed 17 rebounds in those games as well. Against Dakota Wesleyan, she scored 20 points and pulled down 14 boards for her first career double-double. During the game, she knocked down 8 of 12 field goals and tallied five offensive and nine defensive boards. Entering the games this weekend, Hedlund leads SMSU with 65 points, 31 rebounds and a field goal percentage of 53.7%.
LEADING THE PEACOCKS... Two Peacocks find themselves at the top of the charts among Northern Sun Conference players.
Lauren Buck and
Olivia Winkler are the NSIC leaders in defensive rebounds (LB - 7/game) and field goal percentage (OW - 61.9%), respectively. Buck is second in the conference in total rebounds per game averaging 9 per contest.
Emily Gustafson's 9 blocked shots this season have her ranked third in the NSIC, while
Lindsay Carroll is averaging the sixth-most assists per game (3.4). Four Peacocks are averaging double-figures in points including Carroll (14.2), Winkler (12.2),
Aleesha Cleaver (12.0) and Buck (10.8). In addition to Buck on the boards, Gustafson is pulling down 6.2 per game and Carroll is adding 4.6 per contest. As a team, UIU is shooting 40.9% from the field, 36.3% from three and 78.6% at the charity stripe. Cleaver and Carroll are making teams pay for leaving them open from deep converting 58.3% and 43.8%, respectively, from beyond the arc. In addition to her blocks, Gustafson is also recording 2 steals per game from her post position.
HOME COOKING... The Peacocks will return to Dorman on Dec. 12-13 to face Minnesota State University, Mankato and Concordia University -St. Paul.
