Warriors Defense Stifles Peacocks in Fayette

Winona State 65 - Upper Iowa 47. Lauren Buck leads the Peacocks with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her 5th double-double of the season.

The Warriors of Winona State used a stifling defense to force 17 Peacock turnovers and poor shooting from the home team.  Winona State claimed the 65-47 victory to close out the 2014 calendar year for both teams.  Upper Iowa falls to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC, while Winona State improves to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

The home team only scored 8 points in the opening fifteen and a half minutes, but Lauren Buck and Madi Meier sparked a late run in the first half.  UIU scored 14 points in the final four and a half minutes and closed the gap to eight, 30-22, at halftime.  Winona State, however, picked up their defense in the second half and pushed their lead to nineteen by the midway point of the second frame.  The Warriors opened the half with a 12-1 run that covered just three and a half minutes to open up the big WSU lead.  Winona reached their largest lead of 22 on a pair of occasions as the home team never got closer than 15 after the initial Warrior run.

Winona State held the Peacocks to 31.9% shooting (15-47) overall and just 21.4% (3-14) from behind the arc.  Upper Iowa did record a season-high 9 blocks.

Buck led all scorers in the game with 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field.  The Anamosa, Iowa native posted her fifth double-double of the season thanks to her 12 rebounds.  Aleesha Cleaver and Lindsay Carroll both chipped in 7 points, while Carroll added 4 assists.

Upper Iowa will take a break for the holidays and then return to NSIC action on Jan. 2.  The Peacocks will travel to Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3.
