The Peacock women's basketball team struggled to score from the field in the first half while the Warriors of Winona State University nearly hit the half-century mark. Upper Iowa outscored their hosts by two in the second half, but the hole was too large to climb out of. WSU won the game 85-69 to remain undefeated at 5-0 with an early 1-0 mark in the NSIC, while UIU dropped to 2-3 overall.
Lauren Buck scored a team-high 19 points with 7 coming at free throw line, while
Lindsay Carroll netted 13 points with 10 coming at the charity stripe. In total, the Peacocks netted 28 of 34 free throw attempts to account for 40% of their points. Buck pulled down 9 rebounds coming up one board shy of her third straight double-double.
UIU's offense didn't make their first basket until the 16:10 mark when Carroll hit her only three-pointer of the day. Both defenses had control of the game early as Winona State only moved out to a 21-17 lead with less than nine minutes to play in the half. The offenses began to find their stride over the final eight minutes, but the home team exploded to an 18-point lead, 49-31, at the break outscoring their guests 28-14 over the final minutes.
Winona State picked up where they left off in the second half pushing their lead out to 24 points eight minutes into the period. The lead grew to a high mark of 27, 75-48, with six minutes to play. An 18-7 Peacock run brought the margin down to 16, 82-66, with just over a minute to play, but the defecit was more than UIU could make up. Both teams hit a three-pointer in the final minute to push the final count to 85-69.
Upper Iowa will be on the road again next weekend, Dec. 5-6, for their next two NSIC games. The Peacocks will take on the University of Sioux Falls on Friday night and then move on to challenge Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday evening.
