THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... The Peacock women's basketball team heads out on the road for Romeoville, Ill. for a Saturday match up with the #9 Flyers of Lewis University. Upper Iowa is coming off a split last weekend at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo. UIU defeated Western State, but lost a thrilling overtime decision to the host ThunderWolves. The Flyers opened their campaign with a pair of wins over Saginaw Valley State University and Northwood University following three exhibition victories over NCAA Division I opponents. SCOUTING THE FLYERS... Lewis made history this year before the season even started by becoming the first non-DI school to defeat three DI teams in exhibitions. The Flyers topped Loyola-Chicaogo, Northern Illinois and Marquette. Lewis is ranked No. 9 in the preseason NCAA Division II USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll. Junior Mariyah Brawner-Henley recorded 21 points and 22 rebounds in Lewis' 83-75 victory over Northwood. Junior Jamie Johnson has made 7-of-14 (.500) 3-point attempts over the first two games of the season. Lewis had 10 players score a basket in the Flyers' 85-60 win over Saginaw Valley State.
WE BACK PAT GAME... The two teams will be playing a We Back Pat Game in support of The Pat Summitt Foundation, a fund of East Tennessee Foundation, which was established by legendary women's basketball coach Pat Summitt in November 2011. The Foundation is dedicated to winning the fight against Alzheimer's disease, its mission as a grant-making foundation is to advance research for prevention and a cure; to provide hope, care, and critical support for patients, caregivers and families; and to educate the public on the impacts of Alzheimer's disease and the urgent need for a cure.
CARROLL CLEANING UP... Senior guard Lindsay Carroll has been cleaning up at the free throw line this season knocking down 20 of her 28 opportunities. Carroll is averaging 22.5 points/game (2nd NSIC) hitting 71.4% of her shots (3rd NSIC) and 62.5% of her three-pointers (6th NSIC). She is also picking up 4.5 assists/game (3rd NSIC). Carroll was named to the All-Tournament Team following her stand out play for the Peacocks.
GUSTAFSON'S GRAND START... Sophomore Emily Gustafson had a huge impact on the two games in Pueblo, Colo. last weekend. She averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds (3rd NSIC), 4 blocks (1st NSIC) and 3 steals (4th NSIC), while shooting 41.2% from the floor and 90.9% from the free throw line. Gustafson joined Carroll on the All-Tournament Team last weekend.
WITH A WINK... Senior Olivia Winkler played in her home state last weekend and put up her best numbers to date. The Peacock post averaged 19 points (5th NSIC) on 63.6% shooting.
