THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... The Peacock women's basketball teams will kick off the season in Pueblo, Colorado this weekend with a pair of games against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads. Upper Iowa will line up against Western State Colorado University on Friday at 1 p.m. and then take on the host, Colorado State University-Pueblo, on Saturday at 5 p.m.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS... Western State Colorado is located in Gunnison, Colo. and has been a member of the RMAC since 1924. The Mountaineers went 6-20 last season including a 6-16 mark in the conference. WSCU is led by senior Jade McIntosh, who was a second team all-conference selection last season after ending the season as the RMAC's sixth leading scorer. McIntosh averaged 15.7 points per game and shot 42.3 percent (167-of-395) from the field in 2013-14. Along with leading the Mountaineers in scoring, she also led the team in assists with 47, blocks with 11 and grabbed 142 rebounds. McIntosh was an RMAC Third Team All-Conference selection as a sophomore.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES... Colorado State-Pueblo is located in Pueblo, Colo. and has been a member of the RMAC twice from 1967-85 and from 1996-present. The ThunderWolves went 22-9 last season with an 18-4 mark in the RMAC to finish second in the conference and earn a berth into the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament with the #4 seed. Head coach Kip Drown enters his 10th season at the helm of the Pack. Drown owns a 177-97 record during his tenure with the Thunderwolves. The Pack finished second in the conference's regular-season standings and advanced to the semifinals of the RMAC Shootout. CSU-Pueblo has to replace four starters from last season's squad, including a trio of all-conference performers in Taylor Fox, Paige Ramm and Alex Evans. Second-team All-RMAC selection Katie Nehf (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.) returns as the Pack's lone starter from a year ago. Nehf averaged 10.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and league-leading 2.1 blocks per game.
FINAL LOOK BACK AT THE 2013-14 PEACOCKS... During a win over the Wartburg Knights, Whitney Kieffer scored her 1,000th point becoming the 11th Peacock to do so and only the second junior in the history of the program to reach the lofty mark. The team began their Northern Sun Conference season with a win over Winona State at home. After a pair of NSIC losses on the road, Upper Iowa returned to the win column with a weekend sweep over Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls in Dorman to improve to 3-2 in the conference. The Peacocks suffered through a six-game losing skid including a five-point loss at Bemidji State and a four-point loss to U-Mary in Fayette. The team snapped the streak on the road at Southwest Minnesota State where they completed the season sweep of the Mustangs with a 78-71 win in overtime. The win in Marshall, Minn. would be Upper Iowa's last of the season as the team closed out their campaign on an 11-game skid. The final losing streak included two close losses at home, a 6-point loss to Concordia-St. Paul, the NCAA Division II Central Region Champions, and a 4-point loss to Augustana, and a one-point loss at Minot State in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament. Kieffer was
named to the All-NSIC Second Team and the All-NSIC Defensive Team last season. The honors marked the second time that the Scales Mound, Ill. native has earned a spot on the All-NSIC and All-NSIC Defensive Team and third straight season with a postseason award from the NSIC. As a sophomore, Kieffer was named to the All-NSIC First Team as well as the All-NSIC Defensive Team. As a freshman, she was selected for the All-NSIC Freshmen Team.
