WEEKLY NOTES

Upper Iowa | Sioux Falls | Southwest Minnesota State | Northern Sun

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa will head out on the road for a pair of rematches with the University of Sioux Falls on Friday night and Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday evening. The Peacocks defeated both the Cougars (78-75) and the Mustangs (68-60) in Fayette back in early December. The two wins pushed UIU's record in the NSIC to 3-2, but Upper Iowa has lost its last five games to drop to 3-7. The Cougars enter the weekend tied with the Peacocks in sixth place in the NSIC South, but USF broke a 3-game skid with a win at St. Cloud State last Saturday. The Mustangs come into the games on a 12-game slide including all ten NSIC contests this season.

LAST WEEK FOR THE COUGARS... The Cougars split games this weekend falling to Minnesota Duluth 69-59 and defeating St. Cloud State 92-79. The difference in the two games came from behind the arc as USF shot 30% from three-point land in the loss to UMD and shot 51.7% in the victory of SCSU. The Cougars had five players in double-digits in the victory led by Laura Johnson, who dropped 20 points of her own. For the weekend, Johnson averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

LAST WEEK FOR THE MUSTANGS... Ellen Degler averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds as the junior forward led Southwest Minnesota State in close road losses to St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth over the weekend. Degler combined to score 29 points on 12 of 17 shootings and grabbed 15 rebounds, while picking up two assists and a steal. The Mustangs lost both games by a combined seven points dropping a 65-62 decision to St. Cloud State and a 64-60 contest to Minnesota Duluth.

EYE "WHIT"-NESS... Junior Whitney Kieffer, a product of Scales Mound, Ill., is averaging 17.5 points (61st NCAA/4th NSIC) per game and is now shooting 44.8% (13th NSIC) from the floor and 92.5% (8th NCAA/2nd NSIC) from the free throw line. Kieffer also adds 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 steals (3rd NSIC) and 1.9 assists per game for the Peacocks. The 5'9" guard continues her climb up the all-time scoring list at UIU with 1,216 points (70 games - 17.4 ppg). Kieffer is now just 28 points from passing Diane Feltes (1,243) for third place on the all-time list. The all-time leader in points is Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringeberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431. In second place is Hall of Famer Walida (Hawkins) Hewitt (1993-97) with 1,424.

"BUCK" ON BOARD... Junior forward Lauren Buck is enjoying her finest season as a Peacock. She leads the team on the boards with 7.8 rebounds (10th NSIC) per contest and is adding 10.4 points per game, which is the second highest average on the squad. Buck is shooting 45.3% from the floor and went 10-16 last weekend for a 13 point average in UIU's two losses.

SPINAL "THRAPP"... Senior point guard Sam Thrapp had one of her best nights in Peacock blue last Friday as UIU threatened to upset Minot State at home. Thrapp scored 14 points and dished out 12 assists; the dozen helpers tie a career-high for the Davenport native. She is averaging 9.6 points, 4.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game.
