Northward Bound; Peacocks to Wrap NSIC North Slate in Duluth and St. Cloud

The Peacock women's basketball team will travel to face the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Friday night and the Huskies of St. Cloud State on Saturday night.

This Weekend in Peacock Basketball...  Upper Iowa travels north to Duluth and St. Cloud, Minn. to take on their final two NSIC North Divison foes this season.  Friday, the Peacocks battle the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth in Romano Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Saturday, UIU will take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State University in Halenbeck Hall with tip set for 4 p.m.
 
“Kie Whit”-ness... Sophomore Whitney Kieffer enters the weekend leading the NSIC and 14th in the nation in scoring at 19 points per game. The Scales Mound, Ill. native also sits atop the NSIC and 26th nationally in steals with 3 per game, while her 7.2 rebounds per contest are 11th best in the conference. Kieffer is also 64th in the country and 9th in the Northern Sun with an 82.9% (121-146) at the free throw line.  UIU’s star sophomore has five double-doubles this season and is also a two-time Northern Sun Player of the Week.
 
New “Car” on the Lot... Freshman Carly Pagel may only have 23 games under her belt, but she is playing like a veteran in the middle for UIU.  The Sumner, Iowa product is 25th in the NSIC in scoring with 11.5 points per game, which includes a 12.7 average in Northern Sun contests. She is also averaging 6.8 rebounds per game this season, which is good for 16th in the conference.
 
“Sam”-enting Her Spot... Junior Sam Thrapp has solidified her role as the point guard in the Peacock offense. Her 4.1 assists per game (4th in NSIC, 68th in the nation) have brought new life to a young UIU squad. She is also shooting 84.6% from the charity stripe which is 6th best in the NSIC. Since the calendar turned to 2013, Thrapp is averaging 9.9 points, 4.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds, while shooting 37.8% from three (14-37).
 
Beyond the “Hark”...  Laura TerHark has been returning to freshman form over her last eight games from three-point range. The Algona, Iowa native has shot 18-48 (37.5%) from downtown to spark the Peacocks’  offensive attack. The first time the sharp-shooting sophomore faced off against the Bulldogs (December 9, 2011), she rang the bell from beyond the arc five times en route to a career-high 15 points.
