This Week in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa is in Bismarck, North Dakota this week for their First Round game in the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament. The Peacocks will face off against the Marauders of the University of Mary at 7 p.m. UIU heads into the contest as the seventh seed out of the NSIC South, while U-Mary claimed the second seed in the North Division with an 18-10 mark overall and 13-9 record in the conference.
Sophomore Leadership is ‘Kie’... Sophomore Whitney Kieffer has led the Peacocks this season scoring 18.8 points and pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game. The Scales Mound, Ill. native enters the week 16th in the nation and atop the NSIC scoring and 9th in the conference in rebounding. She is also third in the NSIC and 50th nationally with 2.62 steals per game. At the free throw line, Kieffer is 62nd in the country and 6th in the Northern Sun with an 82.5% (137-166) at the free throw line. UIU’s leader has seven double-doubles this season and is a two-time NSIC Player of the Week.
‘Sam’s Club... Junior Sam Thrapp spearheads the Peacock offense with 3.9 assists per game, which is 4th in the NSIC and 84th in the nation. Thrapp is averaging 6.3 points per game while shooting 80.9% from the charity stripe which is 9th best in the NSIC.
Revisting the First Trip to Bismarck… UIU was in Bismarck, N.D. on Jan. 12... eleven Marauder three-pointers helped the home team defeat Upper Iowa by nine, 85-76. In the first four minutes of the game, Upper Iowa jumped out to an 11-4 lead. Five points came from freshman Carly Pagel. U-Mary then came back to take their first lead,13-12, with just over 13 minutes to play in the half. Midway through the first half, U-Mary pulled away after outscoring their guests 24-11 over a stretch. The Peacocks made one final run before the buzzer closing the gap to five, 42-37, fueled by a 14-5 run heading into halftime. In the second half, U-Mary once again tried to get away, leading by as many as 15. In the end, UIU fell 85-76. The Marauders sizzled from behind the arc all night shooting 50% (11-22) from deep. Four Peacocks reached double-figures with Pagel leading the way. The Sumner, Iowa native scored a career-high 22 points to go with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Kieffer tallied 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Laura TerHark accumulated double-digit points for the first time this season with 12 as well. The fourth scorer in double-figures was Thrapp with 10 points along with 6 assists. Chelsea Garcia totaled 8 points, as well as 8 rebounds and 3 takeaways.
