Marauders End Peacocks' Season in First Round of NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament

The Marauders of the University of Mary shot a sizzling 58.9% from the floor on their home court, while holding Upper Iowa to just 32.1% shooting.  U-Mary also claimed a large advantage in rebounds and points in the paint against a depleted Peacock front line.  The Peacocks season came to an end tonight in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament after an 84-62 loss.  UIU finished with a 7-23 record and a 4-18 mark in NSIC play.

The Marauders jumped out to a quick 6-0 run, but Sam Thrapp and Whitney Kieffer brought the Peacocks back with a quick seven points in just one minute on the game clock.  UIU was able to tie the game, 13-13, near the midway point of the first half and took a 23-22 lead with nine minutes to play on an old-fashioned three-point play from Kieffer. 

With 2:06 showing on the clock, U-Mary clung to a 35-34 lead after Thrapp nailed a three-pointer.  Over the final two minutes the Marauders began to separate from their guests thanks to a 6-0 run as U-Mary's Ali Collins took over to give the home team a 41-34 lead at the break.

The Marauders shot 54.8% in the first half and claimed a 22-10 advantage in points in the paint taking advantage of a Peacock front line without freshman standout Carly Pagel

U-Mary wasted little time improving on their lead in the second half.  The Marauders quickly pushed their lead from 7 to 14, 50-36, just over three minutes into the second half.  The home team continued to build on their advantage leading by as many as 27 points on two occassions in the final three minutes.  The final margin was set at 22, 84-62, as the Peacocks fell in the first round of the postseason tournament.

The Marauders once again took advantage of a huge difference in points in the paint, 26-8.  For the game, U-Mary outscored Upper Iowa 48-18 in the paint.

UIU was led by Thrapp, who scored 18 thanks to 11 of 12 shooting at the charity stripe.  Kieffer finished wih 16 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds, while senior Jen Herrick added 11 points and 3 rebounds in her final game for Upper Iowa.  Fellow senior, Chelsea Garcia netted 2 points and tallied 3 assists and 3 rebounds in her final action.  Lindsay Carroll and Lauren Buck chipped in 8 and 7 points, respectively.
