This Weekend in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa hits the road for the last regular-season weekend in the NSIC. On Friday night, UIU will play the # 23 Vikings of Augustana (19-5, 15-5 NSIC) at 6 p.m. inside the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Then, the Peacocks will travel south to face the Wildcats of Wayne State (15-9, 11-9 NSIC) at 4 p.m. inside Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Nebraska.

Lucky Number 13... Sophomore Whitney Kieffer has been as good as gold for the Peacocks this season. The Scales Mound, Ill. native enters the weekend 15th in the nation and atop the NSIC scoring 18.8 points per game. She is also second in the NSIC and 40th nationally with 2.78 steals per game. At 5-9, her 7.2 rebounds per contest (12th best in the NSIC) are equally impressive. Kieffer is also 62nd in the country and 6th in the Northern Sun with an 82.7% (129-156) at the free throw line. UIU’s star sophomore has six double-doubles this season and is a two-time NSIC Player of the Week.

“Thrapp”-ing Her Wings... Not only is Junior Sam Thrapp leading the Peacocks with 3.93 assists per game (4th in the NSIC, 82nd in the nation), but she is becoming a potent scoring threat as well. In January and February, Thrapp is averaging 9.7 points and 3.8 assists per game, while shooting 32% from three (15-46). She is also shooting 81.2% from the charity stripe which is 10th best in the NSIC and 79th in the nation.

Facing Augie Again… One night after hosting WSC in mid-December, the #6 Vikings of Augustana entered Dorman Gym to face the Peacocks.  Down by ten points less than 13 minutes into the game, UIU stormed back with a 17-12 run to go into the break only down by five, 39-34. The Peacocks’ momentum faded quickly in the second half as their guests pushed their lead to double-digits and scored 59 points in the second period en route to a 98-69 victory.

Act One Revisited… In their previous matchup, the Wildcats entered Dorman Gym as the #12 team in the nation. After trailing by seven at halftime, the Peacocks used a 16-10 run to pull within one point nearly seven minutes into the second half. UIU then tied the game at 41-41 thanks to a trifecta from Lindsay Carroll, but with seven minutes left the Peacocks could never take the lead. The Wildcats eventually escaped Fayette with an eight-point victory.
