Upper Iowa to Defend Dorman from Dragons and Wolves

The Peacock women's basketball team will host the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Friday night and the Wolves of Northern State on Saturday night.

This Weekend in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa comes back to Fayette this weekend where they are carrying a two-game win streak in Dorman Gym.  The Peacocks will host a pair of NSIC North Division teams on Prochaska Court this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2.  The Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead will invade Fayette on Friday followed by the Wolves of Northern State University on Saturday.  Tip time is set for 6 p.m. both nights.
 
Can I Get a “Whit”-ness... Sophomore Whitney Kieffer leads the NSIC and is 10th in the nation in scoring at 19.6 points per game. The Scales Mound, Ill. product also sits atop the NSIC and 23rd nationally in steals with 3.1 per game, while her 7.5 rebounds per game are 11th best in the conference. Kieffer is also 61st in the country and 8th in the Northern Sun with an 83.5% (116-139) at the free throw line.  UIU’s star sophomore has five double-doubles this season including a pair last weekend which earned her a second Northern Sun Conference Player of the Week award; she averaged 27 points, 13 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game last weekend.
 
Freshman Standing Tall... Freshman Carly Pagel may only have 21 games under her belt, but she is playing like a veteran in the middle for UIU.  The Sumner, Iowa native is 24th in the NSIC in scoring with 11.8 points per game, which includes a 13.2 point average in NSIC contests. She is also averaging 7.0 rebounds per game this season, which ties for 17th in the NSIC.
 
Good “Sam”-aritan... Junior Sam Thrapp has regained control of the Peacock offense in recent weeks. Her 4.2 assists per game (4th in NSIC, 64th in the nation) have rejuvinated UIU’s attack. She is also shooting 87% (47-54) from the charity stripe which is 4th best in the NSIC. Over the first 9 games of 2013, Thrapp is averaging 10.3 points, 4.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds, while shooting 42.9% from three (12-28).
 
Last Week for the Dragons... Kaycee Charette had a pair of solid performances in helping MSU Moorhead to a weekend sweep on the road. In a 75-66 win over Bemidji State on Jan. 25, Charette had 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and a career-high five steals. She shot 5-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from three-point range. The next day, in a 67-64 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 26, Charette had 12 points and three steals. She hit 3-of-6 three-pointers.
 
Last Week for the Wolves... Rachel Krogman notched her fourth and fifth straight double-doubles last weekend, putting up nearly identical stat lines of 18 points and 11 rebounds in both of NSU’s road games at Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State.  She had eight defensive rebounds and three offensive boards in each contest.  The Wolves defeated Minnesota, Crookston 72-60 on Friday, but were defeated by Bemidji State 64-57 on Saturday.
