WEEKLY NOTES

UPPER IOWA | SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE | SIOUX FALLS | NORTHERN SUN

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa will return to Dorman Gymnasium this weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Conference games against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University and the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14. UIU enters the weekend with a 1-2 mark in NSIC games dropping last weekend at #13 Minnesota State, Mankato and #21 Concordia-St. Paul. SMSU comes to Fayette looking for their first NSIC win, while USF comes in with a 1-2 record in conference play.

LAST WEEK FOR THE MUSTANGS... Alison Nagel averaged 17.0 points as the senior forward scored 17 points in Southwest Minnesota State's losses to No. 10 Augustana and No. 22 Wayne State (Neb.) this weekend. Nagel scored a total of 34 points, while grabbing 11 total rebounds and six assists. She finished shooting 15 of 25 from the floor, including 4 of 8 from downtown. 17 seems to be the magic number for Nagel as the senior forward has scored exactly 17 points in each of the last three games and is averaging 17 points this season. On the young season, Nagel is shooting 52.4 percent (44 of 84) from the floor, including 51.7 percent (15-29) from behind the arc. Nagel is also averaging 6.6 rebounds per game with a season-high of 12 coming on Nov. 16 versus Cal State Monterey Bay.

LAST WEEK FOR THE COUGARS... USF's Laura Johnson (Sr., F, 6-0, Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) played a key role in the Cougars hard fought efforts against Wayne State and Augustana, averaging 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds over the weekend. She also had a total of six steals and four assists in the two games. Johnson currently holds a points per game average of 15.9 points and 8.3 rebounds. The Cougars entered the weekend looking to pull the upset as they faced No. 22 Wayne State and No. 10 Augustana. The Cougars came up just short in both attempts, falling to the Wildcats by nine points and the Vikings by six points.

LAST SEASON AGAINST SMSU... The Peacocks dominated the glass claiming a 12-rebound advantage en route to their first NSIC victory of the 2012-13 season, 80-59. UIU raced out to an 18-4 lead just over seven minutes into the game. SMSU cut the deficit to one, 27-26, with four minutes to play in the half, but UIU answered the bell with an 8-0 run and claimed a nine-point halftimelead, 39-30. Upper Iowa continued to put on the heat in the second half pushing their lead into double digits for all but two of the final twenty minutes. Carly Pagel led the team in scoring with 19 points, while Whitney Kieffer added 18. Kieffer pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds, while Lauren Buck grabbed 7 boards.

BAKER'S DOZEN... Junior Whitney Kieffer (#13) is averaging 14.3 points (19th NSIC) per game through Upper Iowa's first seven contests and is adding 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals (77th NCAA/6th NSIC) and 2.1 assists per game for the Peacocks. The Scales Mound, Ill. native climbed to eight on the all-time scoring list at UIU with 1,071 points (63 games) and is now just 17 points shy of Arielle Beck (1,088 - 1998-2002). The all-time leader in points is Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431.
