THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... Upper Iowa returns to Dorman Gym this weekend to kick off their Northern Sun Conference season against the Warriors of Winona State University. The Peacocks come into Saturday afternoon's contest with a 1-3 mark although the team's offensive output has gone up in each of their four non-conference games. UIU had a busy opening week with three games, but have only donned the game uniforms once in each of the last two weeks.
WHAT THE WARRIORS HAVE BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK... The Warriors forced 29 turnovers – scoring 32 points off those miscues – to beat Viterbo 68-45 in the team's final non-conference game improving to 4-0. The Warriors collected 20 steals as a team, led by Connor Nagle who had a career-best seven. Offensively, Winona State was led by a pair of freshman, with Kaitlin Langer going 7-for-11 from the floor to score a team-high 15 points. Roelofs chipped in 14 points, including two of the Warriors' four made 3-pointers. Abby Busch scored eight of her nine points in the second half while also grabbing six rebounds.
HEADLINING THE MAR"KIE"... Junior Whitney Kieffer is the first name opposing coaches have to plan for each game. She is averaging 16.3 points per game through Upper Iowa's first four contests and is adding 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2 assists per game for the Peacocks. The Scales Mound, Ill. native became the 11th player in program history and the second junior to earn membership into the 1,000-point club during UIU's win over Wartburg. Kieffer has now scored 1,036 points in her 60 games with the Peacocks. Three Peacocks are within reach this weekend as she begins to climb the all-time leading scorer's list. The trio that stand from tenth to eighth on the list include Tara Heller (1,043 - 1998-2002), Christa Hammel (1,046 - 2004-08) and Rochelle Atkins (1,053 - 1985-89). The all-time leader in points is Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431.
DOUBLE-DIPPER... Junior forward Lauren Buck is nearly averaging a double-double after four games. The Anamosa, Iowa native is scoring 9.8 points and pulling down 9.8 rebounds per game while shooting 58.3% from the floor.
"SAM"S CLUB... Senior Sam Thrapp is averaging 9.5 points and 4 assists per game while running the offense.
RETURNING TO FORM... Sophomore Carly Pagel is returning to the form that earned her NSIC Freshman of the Year a season ago. After off-season surgery, Pagel has returned to average 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 63% from the field.
