WEEKLY NOTES

UPPER IOWA | WILLIAM JEWELL | NORTHERN SUN

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASKETBALL... The Peacocks will head to Liberty, Mo. for a rare non-conference double header with the men's team against the Cardinals of William Jewell College. Upper Iowa closed out their mini-home stand last Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 record after defeating Wartburg College, 65-56, and falling to #18 Lewis University, 73-68. The Saturday matinee is UIU's final non-NSIC game and the team's only contest this week.

LOOKING AT THE CARDINALS... The Cardinals are 2-2 currently with wins over Lincoln University and Northwest Missouri State. Wiliam Jewell's two losses came to the University of Central Missouri and Pittsburgh State University. The offense for WJC is averaging 74 points per contest, although the defense is allowing 79.3 points per game. The Cardinals are led by Chelsea Meeks, who is averaging 14 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds per game, and Cassy Nicolay, who is registering 13.5 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block per game.

QUICK "WHIT"... Junior Whitney Kieffer is averaging 19.7 points per game through Upper Iowa's first three contests. The Scales Mound, Ill. native became the 11th player in program history and the second junior to earn membership into the 1,000-point club during UIU's win over Wartburg. She is adding 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists per game for the Peacocks this season. Kieffer has now scored 1,030 points in her 59 games with the Peacocks. Three Peacocks are within reach this weekend as she begins to climb the all-time leading scorer's list. The trio that stand from tenth to eighth on the list include Tara Heller (1,043 - 1998-2002), Christa Hammel (1,046 - 2004-08) and Rochelle Atkins (1,053 - 1985-89). The all-time leader in points is Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick (1995-99) with 1,431.

THE "BUCK" STOPS HERE... Junior forward Lauren Buck is growing into her role as a major contributor to the Peacocks' success moving forward. Through three games this season, the Anamosa, Iowa native is averaging 8 points and 10 rebounds per game. She pulled down a career-high 15 boards against the #18 Flyers on Sunday. Buck is shooting 50% (8-16) from the floor and 40% (2-5) from three.

PUT YOUR THINKING "THRAPP" ON... Senior Sam Thrapp is averaging 10 points and 3 assists per game while running the Upper Iowa offense. The guard is shooting 41.7% (5-12) from behind the arc.

NEXT UP... The Peacocks will open NSIC play against the Warriors of Winona State University in Fayette on Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.
