The Peacock women's basketball team scored a season-high in points Friday night in Dorman Gym to claim a twenty-three point victory, 91-68, over the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston. Upper Iowa used a 20-2 run midway through the first half to post a 14-point halftime lead and then scored 52 points in the second half on the way to a decisive win. UIU improves to 5-13 overall and 2-9 in the NSIC, while UMC drops to 5-10 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
The Golden Eagles pushed out to an early advantage taking a 15-11 lead seven minutes into the contest after draining a three-pointer, but UIU picked up their defense and went on a seven-minute run that turned the tide and put the Peacock in control. Upper Iowa outscored their guests 20-2 during the run to take a 31-17 lead with just over six minutes to play.
Sam Thrapp fueled the outburst with three straight trifectas and adding a pair of free throws. The home team pushed their lead to sixteen points on two occasions prior to halftime; once on a three-pointer from
Lauren Buck and once on a layup by
Whitney Kieffer. As the teams header for the locker rooms, UIU held a 39-25 advantage on the scoreboard.
The home team used the first ten minutes of the second half to push their lead to twenty-six, 66-40, as Kieffer six field goals including three long-range bombs to tally 15 points in that span. The Peacock offense continued to fire on all cylinders as the team dropped in 11 three-pointers on the night.
Laura TerHark converted on 4 attempts, while Kieffer and Thrapp each hit 3 for the game. As a team, Upper Iowa shot a season-high 54.3% (38-70) from the floor and handed out a season-high 24 assists. Thrapp dished out 12 assists on the night; the highest total for a Peacock since Andrea Downs handed out 12 against St. Ambrose in December of 2007.
Kieffer racked up her second-best point total of the season with 30 points on 13 of 19 shooting and also pulled in 6 rebounds. Thrapp recorded her first double-double as a Peacock with 13 points and 12 assists and also added 5 rebounds. TerHark used her long-range conversions to tally 14 points, while
Carly Pagel and
Lauren Buck each netted 9 points. On the boards, Pagel led the team with 10, while Buck grabbed 9 off the glass. UIU worked hard on the boards snatching a 45-26 advantage on the glass.
The Peacocks will return to Dorman Gym Saturday night to take on the Beavers of Bemidji State at 6 p.m.
