Peacocks Dominate Golden Eagles on Night Dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness

On Play4Kay night in Dorman Gym, the Peacocks trailed only once and dominated the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston for a decisive 81-59 win. For the first time since the 2007-08 Northern Sun Conference season, the Upper Iowa women have claimed their third win. The win also marks the first time since the 2009-10 campaign that the program has won three games.

As part of Play4Kay, all who attended could participate in a raffle for a pink basketball autographed by the women's team and all profits from the raffle went directly to breast cancer research. All were encouraged to sport pink clothing and those who did received admission for one dollar. The Peacocks paid tribute to those in attendence who have survived or are in the fight against breast cancer. Three UIU faculty members participated in a ceremonial jump ball; the trio included Karla Gavin, Louise Scott and Lynn Isvik.

Upper Iowa (3-20, 3-16 NSIC) jumped out to an 11-3 advantage thanks to balanced scoring from five Peacocks. The Golden Eagles (9-14, 6-13 NSIC) began to claw away at the deficit over the next four minutes and cut it to one, 16-15. UIU would then go up by as many as 15, twice, the final time coming with 3:43 to play until halftime as they led 36-21. Upper Iowa would take a 36-25 advantage into the locker room at the midway point.

The Peacocks came out of the locker room with intentions to put the game away by going on a 19-4 run in the first seven and a half minutes to push their lead to 55-29. The run was fueled by six points a piece from Laura TerHark and Whitney Kieffer as well as five more from Jeri Jacobson. The deficit would never get any smaller than 18 as UIU cruised to an 81-59 victory.

The Golden Eagles committed 26 turnovers that led to 27 points for the Peacocks. The home team also led the visitors in fast break points, 10-4, as well as points in the paint, 38-30.

NEXT UP FOR THE PEACOCKS...

Tomorrow night, Upper Iowa will take on the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead with tipoff set for 6 p.m. The team will honor their lone senior, Jeri Jacobson, following her final game in Dorman Gym.
