Upper Iowa poured in 44 points in the second half of Wednesday night's non-conference game at Lewis University, but the Flyers matched the Peacocks' output in the second half to hold on for an 86-75 victory. The loss dropped UIU's record to 3-9 overall heading into the holiday break.
The Peacocks took an early four-point lead, 11-7, when
Sam Thrapp and
Carly Pagel hit back-to-back baskets. Upper Iowa fought through a run by the home team answering with a 12-2 run fueled by eight points from
Whitney Kieffer to move ahead by seven, 23-16, midway through the half.
The Flyers turned the tide over the final ten minutes of the half outscoring their guests 26-8 over that span. Lewis claimed a 42-31 lead at halftime.
Lewis pushed their lead to twenty-four points at the 12:03 mark topping the Peacocks 20-7 to open the second half.
Thanks to a quick 19-5 run by the Peacocks, the gap slimmed down to ten points, 67-57, with seven and a half minutes to play. The UIU run was highlighted by seven points from Pagel and five from
Lauren Buck.
Upper Iowa would not get any closer over the final minutes as Lewis maintained their double-digit advantage posting the 86-75 victory.
Kieffer led the Peacocks with her third double-double of the season thanks to 23 points and 12 rebounds. Pagel also topped the twenty-point mark with 21 points while pulling in 8 rebounds. Both Kieffer and Pagel hit seven field goals and seven free throws.
Lindsay Carroll scored 12 and snared 6 boards, while Buck finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds.
The Peacocks are off until Jan. 4-5 when they will host a pair of NSIC foes. Upper Iowa will host the Cougars of Sioux Falls on Friday and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.
