Second Half Explosion Downs Peacocks

#6 Augustana 98 - Upper Iowa 69

Box Score

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team hosted a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time in as many nights this evening in Fayette.  The #6 Vikings of Augustana used a monster second half (59-35) to extend a four-point halftime lead to a 98-69 victory and remain undefeated (9-0, 5-0 NSIC).  After the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

The teams opened the contest evenly as they were tied, 7-7, four minutes into the game.  Over the next four minutes, the Vikings were able to push out to a 16-11 lead, but the Peacocks answered with a jumper by Lauren Buck and a lay up by Carly Pagel.

Augustana tried to get away from their hosts over the next three minutes thanks to an 11-2 run that was fueled by three long-range bombs and gave the visitors a 27-17 lead.

A 5-1 run by the home team over the final two minutes of the half cut the gap to five, 39-34, at the break.

The Peacocks fell behind by twenty, 60-40, quickly in the second when Augie opened the half with a 21-6 run in the first six minutes.

Augustana claimed their largest lead, 31 points, with their 16th and final three-pointer of the night, but Buck hit the final shot of the night with a jumper at the buzzer to set the final score at 98-69.

Whitney Kieffer scored 22 points despite a tough night shooting; the sophomore hit 14 of her 17 free throw attempts on the night and pulled down 9 rebounds and racked up 7 steals, 3 blocks and a pair of assists.  Pagel netted 14 points and snared 7 rebounds, while Buck added 8 points.

The Peacocks will play their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Upper Iowa will travel to Romeoville, Ill. to take of the Flyers of Lewis University at 5:30 p.m.
