The #12 Wildcats of Wayne State were pushed to the limit by the underdog Peacocks tonight in Dorman Gym. The visitors to Fayette were able to edge out a 60-52 victory as the defenses of both teams controlled the action.
The Peacocks fell behind early in the game, 11-2, but a pair of trifectas from
Lindsay Carroll and a fastbreak lay up for
Whitney Kieffer pulled UIU within four, 14-10. Both teams struggled over the final eleven minutes as the Wildcats edged out to a seven-point advantage at halftime, 23-16.
Upper Iowa found their stride against the Wildcat zone in the second half and began to claw away at the margin. The Peacocks came within a point of their guests on several occassions finally tying the game at 41-41 with 7:00 to play on a three-pointer from Carroll.
The Wildcats used a 13-2 run to claim an eleven-point advantage with just over a minute to play, but the Peacocks continued to fight. UIU cut the gap back to six, 57-51, with fifteen seconds on the clock, but Wayne State hit three of their final four free throws to ice the game and post the NSIC win.
Carroll led the Peacocks with 14 points on 4 of 4 shooting from deep. The sophomore also added 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Kieffer finished with 13 points, 3 assists and 3 steals, while
Carly Pagel scored 11 and grabbed 6 boards.
Sam Thrapp handed out 6 assists on the night.
Jordan Spencer paced the Wildcats with 20 points and 12 boards.
Upper Iowa will be back on the court Saturday evening with the #6 Vikings of Augustana at 4 p.m.
