This Week in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa will open the 2012-13 Northern Sun Conference season on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Winona, Minn. at McCown Gymnasium. The Peacocks will face the Warriors of Winona State University at 4 p.m. Upper Iowa is 3-3 on the season and faced Winona State, who is 6-1, in the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational in Alaska on Nov. 23. The Warriors got the better of the Peacocks in that game winning 70-40.
“Kie” for the Peacocks... Whitney Kieffer leads the NSIC in scoring at 20.8 points per game prior to the conference’s opening weekend; the Scale Mound, Ill. product is also first in the NSIC in steals with 3.33 per game and 16th in the conference in rebounding at 7.5 per contest. She was named the NSIC’s first Player of the Week this season after opening her sophomore campaign with her third career double-double. Kieffer scored 31 points and pulled down 10 boards against William Jewell; she also added 6 steals and 3 assists.
Sweet-Shooting Senior... Jennifer Herrick is second on the UIU roster in scoring with 10.8 points per game and she is not wasting her shot attempts. Herrick has hit 54.2% (13-24) of her field goal attempts including 52.6% (10-19) from beyond the arc. The Fond du Lac, Wis. native has also converted seven of her eight free throw attempts after missing the first two games due to injury.
Perfect 10... Lindsay Carroll is averaging 10 points per game for Upper Iowa and the double-digit average is due in part to her perfection at the free throw line. The Western Illinois transfer has made all 24 of her attempts at the charity stripe while shooting 42.1% (8-19) from the three-point line. Despite measuring up at 5-6, Carroll is averaging 2.5 rebounds per game including a 6-board collection against Alaska Fairbanks.
Scouting the Warriors... Winona State has been on a roll after dropping their season opener to St. Mary’s. The Warriors have won six straight including all three at the North Star Invitational in Alaska. WSU’s average margin of victory in Fairbanks was nearly 21 points. Winona State enters the Saturday contest having just defeated Clarke 78-28 on Wednesday evening.
