Anderson University inbounded the ball at half court with three seconds on the clock; the Trojans got the ball inside on a lob and Tilde Ahlin unroke the fifth tie of the game for a 64-62 win for AU. The Peacocks led by as many as ten points in each half at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational, but Upper Iowa was unable to hold off the Trojans and dropped to 3-3 on the year.
Upper Iowa's last ten-point cushion came with just over seven minutes to play in the game when
Carly Pagel converted an old-fashioned three point play. The Peacocks led the Trojans, 58-48, but only scored four points over the final seven minutes while turning the ball over seven times and allowing Anderson the game-winning 16-4 run.
Trailing by seven early, 19-12, the Peacocks went on a 21-4 run over the next ten minutes of the half to take their first ten-point advantage of the night. The run featured a trio of three-pointers and a pair of free throws from senior
Jennifer Herrick. In the final two and a half minutes of the half, Anderson used a 11-4 run to close the halftime gap to just three, 37-34, fueled by three trifectas in the last minute and a half.
The Peacocks controlled the first thirteen minutes of the second half building their lead back to ten points at the 7:10 mark, but were unable to secure their fourth win of the season.
UIU shot the ball well on the night hitting 46.3% (25-54) of their field goal attempts including 40% (6-15) from three, but added only six free throws in seven attempts.
Herrick led the Peacocks with 18 points including four hits from beyond the arc. UIU's offensive leader on the season,
Whitney Kieffer, scored just 11 points and did not attempt a free throw. Pagel finished with 10 as UIU's final double-digit scorer.
On the glass, Upper Iowa won the rebounding battle 31-30 led by Pagel's 7 boards.
Olivia Winkler, Kieffer and
Chelsea Garcia all snared 4 rebounds. Kieffer handed out 4 assists, while
Sam Thrapp dished up 3.
The Peacocks will return to Iowa this week for class and practice and then open Northern Sun Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 1. Upper Iowa will travel to Winona, Minn. to face the Warriors of Winona State University, who they lost to last night. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
