Box Score
In the first of three meetings this season between Winona State and Upper Iowa, the Warriors controlled the non-conference game in Fairbanks, Alaska at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. WSU picked up the 70-40 win improving to 4-1 overall, while UIU dropped to 3-2 on the season.
The Peacocks' second and last lead of the night came just three and a half minutes into the game on a three-pointer from
Whitney Kieffer to go ahead 6-5. A
Lindsay Carroll trifecta at the twelve minute mark pulled UIU within two, 13-11, but Upper Iowa was outscored 20-5 over the final twelve minutes of the half. Winona State took the 33-16 lead into the lockerroom for halftime.
UIU's poor shooting (22.7%) from the floor and 12 turnovers led to the large gap at the break.
The second half proved to be no better for the Peacocks, as the Warriors began to push their lead over twenty points. Upper Iowa's shooting improved slightly in the second half, but nine more turnovers and a smooth Warrior attack, that saw WSU hit over 58% of its shots, proved to be too much to overcome.
Kieffer led the Peacocks with 12 points, while
Sam Thrapp added 7 points and Carroll dropped 6 points in the net.
Carissa Nelson and Kieffer each grabbed four rebounds.
The Peacocks will return to the court one final time in Fairbanks, Alaska. The team will go against the Lady Trojans of Anderson at 5:15 p.m. (Alaska Time~8:15 p.m. CT) on Saturday, Nov. 24.
