The Peacock women returned to Dorman to take on the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul for the second time this season after being away from home for three weeks. Upper Iowa played well in the first half, but a late run to end the first half gave the Golden Bears momentum which they brought into the second stanza. CU pulled away after halftime extending an eight-point lead to a nineteen-point victory, 66-47. The win was Concordia’s ninth straight in conference.
The teams felt each other out for the first seven minutes of the half as each squad put just six points on the scoreboard. A Chelsea Garcia trifecta and a Heidi McKean lay in broke the tie and gave UIU an 11-6 advantage. The Golden Bears then went on a 9-2 run that gave them the 15-13 lead. The home team countered with five straight points from Jen Herrick to claim an 18-15 lead with under six minutes to play. The Golden Bears went to the locker room with a 30-22 lead after scoring the final seven points of the half.
In the first half, the two teams combined for 20 turnovers; Upper Iowa tallied 9. The visitors dominated the glass as well as field goal percentage in the opening twenty minutes. The Peacocks were outrebounded 23 to 14 and only shot 27% from the floor, while the Golden Bears shot nearly 43%.
The two teams played an even first four minutes, but Concordia outscored the Peacocks 22-12 over the next six and a half minutes to extend their lead to 55-36. A CU three-pointer with two and a half minutes to play gave the Golden Bears their largest lead of the game, 63-41. UIU scored six of the final nine points to set the final score at 66-47.
Upper Iowa’s shooting woes continued in the second half as the home team hit 29% of their attempts. Chelsea Arndt and Herrick led the Peacocks with 9 points apiece, while Jeri Jacobson and Cassandra Deiters added 6 each. Lana Otting, McKean and Deiters all pulled in 6 rebounds for the home team. Otting had a solid passing night as she handed out 7 assists.
The Peacocks (1-19, 1-15 NSIC) will return to the hardwood of Prochaska Court tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. Upper Iowa will welcome the Huskies of St. Cloud State for the NSIC tilt.
