The Peacocks took on the Flyers of Lewis University in tonight’s home opener.  It took two overtimes to decide a winner.  Lewis was able to make some clutch free throws in the end and survive by a count of 90-86 after UIU twice extended the game in the final seconds.  Upper Iowa’s record drops to 0-2 early on in the 2011-12 campaign.

The Peacocks started fast taking an early 8-0 lead, but the Flyers responded to the early adversity.  Despite the response, Upper Iowa maintained their lead through the course of the first half and took a lead as big as six, 23-17.  However, Lewis was able to tie the game up at 23 and then took a 31-28 lead into the locker room.

The visitors made their halftime adjustments and increased their lead to eight, 38-30, just over five minutes into the second frame.  UIU would battle their way back and tie the game at 41-41 fueled by five of Whitney Kieffer’s team-leading 22 points.  The Flyers then tried to put the game away leading by as much as 13 with just over six and a half minutes remaining in regulation.  Lewis kept their lead until Laura TerHark hit a game-tying three on a designed play at the top of the key to send the game into the first overtime knotted up at 68.

The visitors were able to take a three-point lead in the first overtime, 75-72, but once again the home team would tie the game in the final seconds.  Jennifer Herrick drove down the left side of the lane, spun to her right and drained an eight-foot jumper to send the contest into a second overtime with the score tied, 76-76.

Scoring was back and forth before its fourteenth and final tie, 86-86, with just under a minute to go in the second overtime.  Lewis would go on to sink four huge free throws and take the four-point victory, 90-86.

Leading the charge for the Peacocks was Kieffer with 22 points along with eight rebounds, three steals and two helpers.  Herrick added 19 points and six rebounds while TerHark chipped in 12 points as well.  Ashlee Bailey brought down six boards and Chelsea Garcia handled five.

The Peacocks will return to Prochaska Court on Thursday evening.  Upper Iowa will take on the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
