Feb. 5, 2010

Box Score

The Peacock women's basketball team returned to Prochaska Court Friday night welcoming the Marauders of the University of Mary for an Northern Sun Conference match up. U-Mary took a ten-point halftime lead thanks to a 62% shooting percentage in the opening stanza. Upper Iowa owned the court for the opening ten minutes of the second half, but ran out of gas in the final minutes dropping the game, 62-52. After the loss, UIU drops to 2-19 on the season and 0-14 in the NSIC, while U-Mary improves to 9-12 overall and 5-9 in conference action.

The Peacock shooters were cold through much of the first half hitting only three of their first twenty-three field goal attempts over the first fourteen minutes of the game. The Marauders took advantage of the home team's shooting woes to get out to a seventeen-point lead, 30-13, with 5:37 to play in the first half. Upper Iowa began to find their rhythm in the final minutes of the half as they cut the gap to just ten points at the break, 35-25.

In the second half, the tables turned and it was the U-Mary shooters who were finding difficulty scoring. The Peacocks held the Marauders to just seven points over the first eleven minutes of the half, while scoring eighteen thanks to a pair of three-pointers and two old-fashioned three point plays. The 18-7 run gave UIU their first lead, 43-42, of the game since the opening minute when they led 2-0.

U-Mary was quick to react and grabbed the lead right back with a lay up by Shauna Knife. The visitors closed the contest on a 19-9 run after falling behind the Peacocks by one. U-Mary held Upper Iowa to just three points in the final six minutes of the game to pull away with the 61-52 victory.

Upper Iowa was led by senior Paige DeVine, who netted 11 points and handed out 3 assists. Sophomore Lana Otting added 10 points and 3 assists, while Jen Herrick chipped in 10 points as well thanks to 3 of 4 shooting behind the arc. Otting cleared five rebounds off the glass for UIU, while Inga Briede and Carrie Thoma each snared four.
