Peacocks Fall in Final Road Contest of 2009-10 Season

The Peacock women's basketball team closed out the road portion of the 2009-10 season Wednesday evening as they visited McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn. to battle the Warriors of Winona State University. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead and wouldn't look back on their way to a 98-72 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory.

Winona State scorched the nets in the first half of the contest while racing out to a fast 17-4 lead with 13:17 to play before halftime. While the visitors settled in shortly after, WSU extended their lead to 49-29 going into the halftime break. The Warriors shot an impressive 58.6% (17-29) in the first half of action which included a 69.2% (9-13) from beyond the three-point arc. The Peacocks shot 40% (10-25) from the field in the first half, but only connected on three trifectas.

Senior Paige DeVine led UIU at the break with eight points with Inga Briede and Lana Otting each contributed six points. UIU committed 12 turnovers, five more than the home team.

The Peacocks and Warriors went back-and-forth for the first five minutes of the second half, but the home team would open their lead to 30 multiple times in the final 15 minutes of action as WSU handed the Peacocks a 98-72 loss.

DeVine led UIU with 16 points on four-of-seven shooting and eight free throws. Jennifer Herrick and Karina Berinobis each netted 12 points while Otting lead UIU with eight rebounds. Both teams shot over 50% from the floor for the game as WSU shot 55.4% (36-65) and UIU recorded a 53.2% (25-47) field goal percentage. The home team forced 19 Peacock turnovers, which they turned into 31 points.

The Upper Iowa women will close out the 2009-10 season this Saturday, February 27, when the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul visit Dorman Gym in Fayette for a 2 p.m. showdown. Seniors Paige DeVine and Inga Briede will be honored prior to playing their final game in an Upper Iowa jersey.
