Warriors Open Second Half Strong to Defeat Peacocks

Winona State 84 - Upper Iowa 51

Jen Herrick scored 12 for the Peacocks at Winona State.

The Peacock women's basketball team opened their 2010-11 Northern Sun Conference season tonight in Winona, Minnesota.  Upper Iowa visited Winona State to face the undefeated Warriors in the NSIC debut.  Peacock turnovers fueled two pivotal runs by the home team that proved to be too much to overcome.  In the end, Winona State claimed an 84-51 victory to improve to 5-0 and 1-0 in the NSIC, while UIU falls to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in the early conference season.

The Warriors jumped out early, but the Peacocks were able to rally in the early minutes and with over twelve minutes to play in the first half the margin was just four, but a six minute drought put Upper Iowa in a hole that proved to much to come back from .  UIU trailed, 19-15, with over twelve to play, but points 16 and 17 did not come until the clock moved under seven minutes before the horn.  The home team claimed a 40-26 lead at the break.

The Warriors came out of halftime on fire outscoring their guests 22-3 to open the second half en route to their big win.

Heidi McKean and Jennifer Herrick led the Peacocks with 12 points apiece.  While the Upper Iowa offense hit on over 43% of their shots, a 26-6 disadvantage in turnovers made the difference and led the Warriors to too many good looks.

The Peacocks will be on the road next weekend as well.  Upper Iowa will travel north to Minnesota again next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11.  UIU will play at Minnesota Duluth on Friday at 6 p.m. and then head over to Bemidji State on Saturday to play at 4 p.m.
