Mustangs Run Away From Peacocks in Second Half

The Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball teams met in Dorman Gym on Saturday evening. The two teams lining up for their only match up this season.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Peacocks rallied to pull within one, 8-7, after the first four minutes of play. Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State continued to play even as the first half moved toward its midway point a jumper by Cassandra Deiters once again cut the gap to one, 21-20.

A quick 9-0 run by the visitors gave SMSU a 30-20 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the half. UIU would not let their guests get away though as they used an 8-0 run of their own to get back within two. The Peacock run was initiated by an Inga Briede three-pointer. Over the final five minutes of the half, the Mustangs outscored their hosts 11-4 to claim a nine-point lead at the break, 41-32.

The two teams both scored 16 points in the paint, but the difference came in fast break points where the Mustangs held a 9-0 advantage.

Deiters and Kenya Howard each netted 7 points for UIU and combined for 9 rebounds in the opening twenty minutes.

The Mustangs were led by Miley Hunziker and Abby Kenealy, who tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively. Tori Fink led SMSU on the boards with 5.

The Peacocks cut the margin to six points, 49-43, after a pair of free throws from Howard at the 13:03 mark. The rally by UIU included a defensive stand that kept SMSU scoreless for three and a half minutes. Once the Mustang offense broke the drought, they did not look back as they outscored the Peacocks 31-11 over the remainder of the half.

Southwest Minnesota State took advantage of 21 Upper Iowa turnovers and converted 18 fast break points for the game. The Mustang defense stood strong in the second half as they limited the Peacocks to just 6 field goals.

The visitors were led by Kenealy, who registered 24 points including four three-pointers. Laura Kramer claimed 8 rebounds, and Megan Stadler handed out 10 assists.

Howard and Lana Otting finished with 13 points apiece and Deiters added 11. Deiters registered a double-double with 11 rebounds as well.

The Peacocks (1-13, 0-8 NSIC) will host the Vikings of Augustana College next Friday night and the Wildcats of Wayne State College on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 6 p.m. in Dorman Gym.
