The Upper Iowa volleyball team impressed the home fans in Fayette in the team's home debut for the 2009 season. The Peacocks swept the Warriors of Waldorf College in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-22, and 25-9. With the win, UIU improved to 7-3 on the season, while Waldorf slipped to 1-11.
Upper Iowa used a .355 hitting percentage in set one as the Peacocks only committed two attacking errors. UIU's hitting percentage cooled in the second set, but the home team perservered to win the close set as both teams collected 6 attacking errors. In the final set, the Peacocks dominated the Warriors with a .400 hitting percentage, while forcing their opponents into a -.121 hitting percentage.
Leading the Warriors on the night were Beth Bohnet (18 assists), Synnove Abrahmason (10 kills), Andrea Blanchard (12 digs), and Ashleigh Betha (10 digs). For the match, Waldorf hit -.009 with 23 kills against 24 errors.
Upper Iowa got great play from Nicky Brown, who registered 6 digs and 8 kills, while hitting .389 for the match. Maryn Fulton added 7 kills and 4 blocks, while Sara Vance recorded 5 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Keri Vance paced the Peacock attack with 28 assists on the night, while fellow senior Shea Meyermann led the team in digs with 16. Libero Danielle Gernes chipped in 8 digs on defense. For the match, UIU hit .255 with 35 kills and just 10 attacking errors. The Peacocks also had a 7 to 2 advantage in team blocks.
UIU will spend this coming Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, competing in the Rockhurst Classic hosted by Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. The Peacocks will take on #6 Washburn and Fort Hays State on Friday and then line up against Rockhurst and Missouri Western on Saturday. UIU's next home match is next Tuesday night, Sept. 15, against the two-time National Champion and current #1 team in the nation, Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul.
