The Peacock Women's Soccer team closed out the 2009 Peacock Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon as they hosted Missouri S&T University. The Peacocks allowed a goal with six seconds remaining, and couldn't find the back of the net in the ensuing overtime periods to tie the Miners, 3-3.
The Peacocks scored early in the 7th minute as Emily Gielau's long shot sailed into the upper left corner of the goal giving UIU an early 1-0 lead.
However, every time the Peacocks scored, it seemed the Miners had an answer as 12 minutes later S&T tied the game a 1-1.
Freshman Alyssa Petersburg scored the second Peacock goal in the 32nd minute as she pounded home her own rebound. At the break, UIU lead 2-1.
The Miners tied things again at 2-2 in the 51st minute before Liz Kaluzinski scored in the 61st minute to put UIU back on top, 3-2. However, the Peacocks allowed a goal with just six seconds left in the match, sending the battle into overtime.
The overtime periods were a defensive struggle for both squads, and the contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
Amy Campbell, Shaina Marnell and Valeria Ptasinski all tallied assists in the match while goalkeepers Melissa Heitzman and Kristen Phillips combined for 10 saves for the match.
The Peacocks will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Wednesday to play the Mustangs of Mount Mercy College in their next match. The interstate battle is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
